Can we start a thread where we give feedback on the improvements we would like to see to the site?

Maybe this has been done before, but I thought MNHQ might find it useful feedback, even if for complicated technical reasons or because the MN old timers would go mad, it's not possible.

Here goes:

  1. Proper buttons for bolding, italics etc instead of the DOS era keystrokes.
  1. When you scroll over a thread link, it shows you the first few lines of the first post
  1. The thread originator is shown on the list along with the latest poster.

Anybody else?

Maryz-I just changed (briefly) to Classic to see what it was like on the iPad - and had exactly the same thought as you did about New! I'd forgotten how tiny and cramped Classic looks.

Not sure what you mean about text wrapping though - for me it wraps in both New and Classic....

paperview · 15/02/2011 20:39

Actually, i tell you what i would like to see.

Mandatory on profiles....member since month/year which follows you from name change to name change (could help with the pop up trolls?) and it stays there even if you don't have a profile (like me)

paperview · 15/02/2011 20:22

There have been countless threads on the reasons why edit and quote functions are not going to appear any time soon.

C&P and preview are your friends Wink

Bookmarks on classic would mean that it is no longer...well, classic wouldn't it?

SlubberdeVelcro · 15/02/2011 18:37

No to Quotes.

No to all the new horrid emoticons and an emoticon free Lent please.

Don't want thread originator either.

Don't want anything new tbh. Want everything to revert to how it was before mn new

Thread originator would be good.

Big big NO to quotes.

I like ideas 2 and 3 from the OP. I have been on forums that have had these features and they're really useful.

I'd like to be able to embed images, but I bet everybody else would hate it Grin

I'd like to be able to do embedded quotes like DamianTech

A poll facility would be fun and, if used in Mumsnet Campaigns, it could be a useful indicator of how much support there is for an idea.

I will NOT use new and still want to know why we can't have bookmarks on classic.

paperview · 15/02/2011 14:38

maryz - I have been here since 2005 in various frocks. Come on jump in Grin

maryz, i have mine set to look and behave like classic but with the 'tricks' i like - like the bookmarking

HettyAmaretti · 14/02/2011 16:09

I hated MN new when it came in, but actually it's much better. I switched between new and classic for ages but new won out in the end.

Go on, try it for week. I bet you'll like it Wink

I often post on threads I'm interested in but that later descend into bunfights, become totally uninteresting or die a sudden death. I'd love to be able to hide / bump threads in TIO in the same way as in TIW.

IMO watched threads is more a long term reference thing.

A 'threads I've bookedmarked' bit would be grand, bookmarking is a great feature but I tend not to use it 'cause I then have to add them to my watch list which I'd rather not do. They're usually of short term interest.

Maryz problem with Last 15 minutes is one I'm sure I've seen mentioned may a time over the years. TBH I never use it so it doesn't bother me.

PaperView · 14/02/2011 15:47

Oh i see! You want an @reply/mention button type thing? NOw that is a good idea after your explanation!

PaperView · 14/02/2011 15:41

Not fussed or see the need for any of these so far.

I don't understand what you want to happen when you @ reply someone iCod (@iCod Wink) surely you just type it like you did?

FluffyMummy123 · 14/02/2011 15:33

agree with all in OP

a way to reply to - like the twitter arrow
so

" yes @greythorne" rahter than shitty bolding

DamianTech · 14/02/2011 15:32

I may be dangerously close to foot-in-mouth syndrome here, but the idea as I see it is that watched threads consists of all the threads you're interested in, and TIO is obviously all the threads you've posted on. If you're interested in a thread and have posted in it, then surely you'll also be watching it? Similarly if you're not interested in a thread you've posted on you can unwatch it (or even hide it). Do we need this level of customisability for TIO? On most forum programs the concepts of watched threads and threads posted in are basically the same thing anyway.

I'm not sure what's happening with the thread hiding, it seems to be working for me. Are you properly logged in, i.e. you get Log out/Inbox/etc. links at the top of the page? And do your hidden threads appear in the last hour/last day pages too?

Don't worry, I'm not ignoring you. Just trying to keep my forum posts from becoming full-blown essays. Too much of a good thing, or something like that. Wink

Maybe this has been done before, but I thought MNHQ might find it useful feedback, even if for complicated technical reasons or because the MN old timers would go mad, it's not possible.

Here goes:

  1. Proper buttons for bolding, italics etc instead of the DOS era keystrokes.

  1. I see no reason why we can't have buttons above the reply box living alongside the hints section to the right, meaning people can edit whichever way they choose. So long as there isn't a great resurgence of hatred for the idea, it'd probably help those who are more used to the MS Word way of things.
  1. There are some technical hitches with this. Mainly it wouldn't be practical to have more than about 1 line of text in a tooltip, since having big boxes appear over every single thread link would be distracting (and a nightmare for older PCs). And the work required to get that single line for each thread is quite taxing, so I don't reckon it'd be worthwhile doing unless the idea gets a lot of popular support.
  1. This is easily done if people are happy with the change. It does mean you have to remember the first nick is the latest and second the author (or whatever), but hopefully it'll be clear? What do people think?

Appreciate the feedback from you guys as always. It's always nice to hear some ideas to improve the talk pages. Brew
