What did I miss?

I agree with you desertgirl. I just don't understand how else huge swwathes of the population are expected to earn a living without the availability of domestic work. Let alone the poor infrastructure and lack of convenience goods that mean greater reliability on domestic help.

As I said above, I am "educatable" on the issue of terminology. But it is utterly ilogical to protest about the employment of domestic staff.

desertgirl · 12/07/2010 08:56

expatinscotland, had she employed him directly she might have been able to, I know people who have been able to get visas for their domestic staff on a temporary basis; though they have had very good reasons.

I think I am disappointed the thread was pulled, I wanted to see if anyone had answered some of the questions I had (like how it would be to anyone's advantage or decrease the inequalities in the world if I didn't employ my housekeeper) though even very early on MOS was fairly open about having intended to get people going - I said something about 'this was never going to go down well on here' and she said, basically, that was the plan!

I hope the comments above about expats banging on about how grateful their staff are don't refer to me; I didn't say that; though I did comment on what my housekeeper has managed to do in the Philippines with her money during the time she has been in the Gulf (not just with me). I don't suppose she is any more "grateful" than I am to my employer, though we have a good relationship.

I also don't get the people going on about it being demeaning for someone to do your housework for you; was it demeaning for the cleaning service I had in the UK (when I didn't have children, just a job with long hours) to come in and clean? is it demeaning for the lady who cleans for my mum to come in and do that?

Yes the term houseboy is alien to many ears; if that were the only issue I would have understood, but the anti-domestic-staff brigade, I just didn't see where they were coming from; would the rest of the thread have made it any clearer, I wonder?

Hmm just read the local Brighton thread.
Looks like there are some on MN who want to cause a fuss and then run away when it all goes a bit pear shaped on them.

expatinscotland · 11/07/2010 23:04

It was all a moot point because there's no way she'd have been able to get a visa for the poor chap, his being a non-EU national.

thatbuzzingnoise · 11/07/2010 23:01

isn't attention seeking and winding up really facets of the same thing?

One cannot bring labour hired abroad into the UK unless the employment contract follow UK employment laws.

The Saudi and other Gulf Royal families used to bring their help here and now they cannot.

Eurostar · 11/07/2010 23:00

I went out, came back to find my call to revolution to help "Fred" get a visa, deleted along with the rest.

It was an odd type of wind up as it was all quite real. Seems to be some people at the rl meet knew that MOS would get a strong reaction for posting her complaint to the gang that she was having to do ironing while she could have had Fred here to do that, and show him a bit of England's green and pleasant land, rather than have him stuck back at the compound washing up a pot noodle fork and watching cricket on Star TV. I think they were naughty people pushing MOS into posting, in the same way that Simon Cowell is a bugger for humiliating people who have no idea how they actually come across in real life.

I'm totally not understanding why Noddy was called a B*tch, she was hardly on the thread, although she did agree with my post that it was not on to use someone's hard life and travel ban as a basis for a post for a wheeze with the gals.

SlartyBartFast · 11/07/2010 22:55

not necessarily in the hope that everyone would kick off. obviously knew the mention of having a houseboy would irk some posters,

tethersend · 11/07/2010 22:54

SlartyBartFast · 11/07/2010 22:53

you dont know it was a planned wind up fgs.
perhaps she talked, you know, in rl in brighton, about her dilema and posted it here

AnyFuleKno · 11/07/2010 22:53

tethers who said you were bullying?

AnyFuleKno · 11/07/2010 22:52

I don't know if the problem was fictitious, but it certainly seems to have been posted in the hope that everyone would kick off.

tethersend · 11/07/2010 22:52

Blimey. Apparently I'm bullying now. And am a bitch.

I'm not sure I want to go to Brighton tomorrow, they don't seem very nice down there.

sharbie · 11/07/2010 22:49

So just got on here - this was all a wind up right (thank goodness).
But other MNers were saying they knew OP in real life??

tethersend · 11/07/2010 22:44

Ah Quattro.

AnyFucker · 11/07/2010 22:44

KAQ...you are shameless

Quattrocento · 11/07/2010 22:40

Well it wasn't terribly edifying to discover it was a massive planned wind-up

Tethers, you were awesome.

SparkOfSense · 11/07/2010 22:40

Blow jobs? Willy-Nilly? Is this what MN is about? Appropriate face -->

KickArseQueen · 11/07/2010 22:40
