It makes me think of servant too. Like in Jane Eyre when she talks about the abigails running about the house. I think that meaning comes from a wife of Davids or something. I like Abigail but not keen on Abi.

I love it. It is my cousin's name and I would love to have called my dd it but my mum says: "We can't have two in the family".

No, I meant, your child will always get called their whole name, ie "Abigail Jones," or "Abigail Smith" [or whatever] as it's the kind of name there will always be a couple of. (grammar . . . )

Not that I'd mind - my DCs do not have unusual names. But a lot of people post on here to find out how popular the name they have their eye on is.

The "servant" bit came from the Victorian era when a certain type of servant was an Abigail. I think Abigails were the servants who helped the lady of the house get dressed.

I think it's a lovely name but they are ten a penny round our way, a definite surname-as-well name.

quite a pretty name, but there are quite a few of these in my dc primary school and also the secondary, mainly shortened to Abbie. I Agree about the Gail bit, Abbie is a nicer name in its own right.

Number 22 on the list might mean another in the school, or two others if it's a big school. And maybe one in ballet class OR another one living nearby but probably not both.

Even a name like Emily which was number one the year my dd was born I think, there aren't two in my dd's class. There isn't ONE Emily in her class, although there's an Emily in the year above.

I know when you are having your 1st baby, it can be quite hard to relate the position of a name on a list to how many you'd come across in real life.

And again, it depends. flora was quite common where I used to live, not even in the top 100 I don't think.

I like it. It's number 22 on the top 100 for 2008, so what does that mean, 1 in every class, not too bad.

I'm an Abigail and am a little gutted that it is so popular now!! I used to like being the only one when I was younger but on the plus side at least I don't have to spell it all the time these days!!! I'm nearly always Abi though unless I want to sound posh...

It's does mean Father's Joy (or Father Rejoiced) - it'sa certainly not 70's (I was born in 1970 and there certainly weren't many around then, I would have noticed). It's a great name and should be shortened to Abi

If I'd had a girl I would have used it. I love that name. It's so beautiful, but not one of those cute little girl names that sound stupid on you when you get to 30!

my neighburs kid is called Abi - nice name. My best mate at school to.... though i don't like that it means 'servant'

it is a name i associate with good people though.
