Flora?

Hi,

I just love the name Flora and have been thinking about this for months and cannot pick another name over it. But my mum and sister both think it unwise due to the obvious connection with the margarine and say that she may be bullied about this when she is older.
I am pretty sure we will go ahead with Flora but just wanted to know other opinions as nobody else knows we are expecting another girl, so have no one else to ask.

My middle name is Flora and I did get teased at school with it and suffered, of course, the spreading comments! As a grown up though, I love it. I do live in the USA now though and they don't have the margarine!

My sisters middle name is Flora and never once till I read this thread did I think of Margarine.

Our daughter is a Flora, she is 12 and has never suffered for it. She has never had to put up with there being lots of Floras at school or pre school, in fact I don't think there have ever been any others. Her friends also call her Flo which really suits her too.

Very cross about that margerine company what on earth is the connection between margarine and a pretty name like Flora?

Flora is a great name - albeit one it's taken me about 25 years to appreciate

I was teased a bit at school (ooh, bet you spread well and flora are you proactive? being two of the more memorable 'insults'), but name teasing wasn't so bad. Microbiology lectures at uni were a bit awkward, and I was nicknamed 'gut flora' for a while, but it was never particularly offensive - just silly teasing. Now my name makes me stand out, as it's not very common. My DP loves my name, as he thinks it's really pretty and unusual

Oh, and back in Glasgow (where I used to live) it was often shortened to flo, whereas it's ALWAYS flora whilst down south!

one of my dear friends is a Flora and still living with 'spreads easily' She's resorted to introducing herself as Flo.

oh and incidentally my Flora is stunningly beautiful......I know I'm her mother but seriously, she is!
and if you love an name that much and then don't use it I reckon you'll regret it.

2nd for me is the margerine, but go with what you want because it's your babba and you need to like the name.

It's always on that fanjo cream advert! 'Restores the flora of bacteria in the vagina' or something to that effect, honestly, I am not mad much.

Yes, her father is Scottish and we moved to Scotland three years ago, but not posh-Scots though.
Good to hear all the nice comments, although I really don't think many will associate the name with human bacteria...well I hope not!

A friend of mine's maiden name was MacDonald and she called her DC4 Flora

Beautiful classic name makes me think of Flora McDonald rather than margerine. Also IMO suits all ages so I would'nt be worried about the teenage bit. The problem with Florence is it does get shorted to Flo aka Andy Capp

It's a fab name. So so beautiful. I don't get the margarine thing at all. I know a beautiful Flora too, perhaps the same one?

Do you have any Scottish connections? It's a very traditional highland/island name there though used more by posh-Scots in the last 2 decades. The gaelic version is Floraidh, pronounced Flaw-ray.

If you love it, go for it. I just don't understand this preoccupation with potential future teasing.

Isn't flora said in the context of bacteria in the vagina? Is that not what everyone associates it with?
