I think Seraphine is pretty and elegant - think I prefer Serena, or Evangeline though. I think Daphne and Pearl are very cool, but the trouble with cool is it can easily turn into over-popular/common. I vaguely know a girl called Daphne who is about 15 now - how smug/uber-cool do you think her parents feel?!

Mumcentreplus · 30/08/2009 22:04

Daphne - Scooby Doo

Pearl = Old Lady

Seraphine = Old lady under the sea

jasper · 30/08/2009 21:52

Daphne and Pearl are very cool

Tinfoil · 30/08/2009 21:47

I think Seraphine sounds pretty and unusual.

justbeenforapromenade · 29/08/2009 22:18

Does Seraphine sound brash, brassy and common or elegant and sophisticated?

Vanilla - we ALL make a statement/expression about ourselves when we name our children. Even if we call them Sarah, Jonathan, Matthew or Laura. It just says a different thing about us, that's all! If you name your children something ordinary, safe and unoriginal it just tells the world that you are ordinary safe and unoriginal.

piscesmoon · 28/08/2009 13:24

No, no and no.

loobylu3 · 28/08/2009 13:19

How about:

Elodie
Delphia/ Delphine
Iris
Ivy
Cecily
Lucia
Valentina (although v different style to Violet)
Penelope
Eleanora
Blythe
Dorothy/ Dorothea
Genevera

I love all of these and we seem to have (fairly) similar taste.

Thunderduck · 28/08/2009 12:18

I don't think of Daphne as being a gorgeous name, quite the opposite actually.

LouMacca · 28/08/2009 11:50

I don't like any of the names but if it HAS to be one of them I would be Seraphine.

Daphne and Pearl both awful imo.

IveGotHamButImNotAHamster · 28/08/2009 10:50

Daphne

Tinfoil · 28/08/2009 10:05

Pearl.

FairLadyRantALot · 28/08/2009 07:32

Seraphina, rather than Seraphine, I think...I know a Seraphina, she was the sister of my very first Placement ward when I did my nursing training, and she was well respectable...certainly no airhead...

Daphne, a wonderful lovely neighbour of mine, I quite like the name

Pearl could be pretty, but sadly my bys are spngebob fans...and pearl will forever be Mr. Crabs Daughter, who is for some reason a whale....sorry

belgo · 28/08/2009 07:02

Also Adrienne.

belgo · 28/08/2009 07:00

Delphine I mean!

All the best with this pregnancy.

belgo · 28/08/2009 06:59

I love the french names Dalphine, Celeste, Anaïs and Vivienne.

Seraphine also lovely.

justbeenforapromenade · 28/08/2009 06:33

Any more suggestions for a future dd's name? I am now newly preg after recent m/c so like to assuage any worries by dreaming up names!

Already chosen name if a boy.

I find some of the above comments wildly amusing. I am obviously a conscientious human being of sound mind looking for a classically gorgeous name (Daphne is possibly the least trad, only making its appearance in the 20th century). My first dd is Violet, which is perfect for her as she is the only one we know and she is a gorgeous, gregarious little girl. I would personally never wish to saddle my child with a name in the top 10 - I think my child might resent me for it and want something a little individual. Not necessarily outlandish to the tune of Moondog Wolfchild.

Seraphine has come to grow on me of late, and feel it follows the zeitgeist ( the spirit of the times) very traditional with a French feel (like Valentine, Clementine).

I like your names justbeen! I think Daphne is gorgeous. I love Pearl too although I would say it is less of a classic. I would disagree with one poster who thinks they are 'achingly cool'. They are perfectly good names but just not the most commonly heard so they sound strange to some people.
Less keen on Seraphine but certainly don't actively dislike it.

bamboobutton · 26/08/2009 11:15

love love love Seraphine!

it's top of my list for girls names, if i ever have a girl.

sausagesupper · 26/08/2009 11:11

pearl if made to choose, but prefer neither

MrsMattie · 26/08/2009 11:09

Seraphine, although prefer Seraphina.
Daphne is unspeakably bad.
Pearl's pretty horrid, too.

gagamama · 26/08/2009 10:03

Pearl is the best of those. Daphne is not quite 'old' enough yet - the ones I know are only in their early 60s. It's a throwback name rather than a vintage one. And Seraphine sounds like a nice name for a unicorn.

cheesesarnie · 25/08/2009 20:16

i love pearl

Horton · 25/08/2009 20:15

I like Pearl a lot and also Seraphine. Not keen on Daphne which sounds a bit wet to me.

Surely any parent is imposing their choice on a child? Even if you call your kid Jane or Emma or Grace or Rose or whatever happens to be the most usual name in their year, you're still imposing your tastes. Who knows, they might rather have been called Banana or Hephzibah.
