What do you think of Ethel as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

Hmmm not too keen on Ethel.

However I do like Edith or Enid.

its not for me some of these old lady names are gorgeous but some of the ones turning up again are not nice sounding names at all.

Thunderduck · 01/09/2009 11:04

Looking around this board I'm becoming convinced that MN has been invaded by The Society For The Advancement and Preservation Of Incredibly Ugly Names.

bubblepop · 01/09/2009 08:41

its a really old fashioned old lady name.

boodleboot · 31/08/2009 10:26

i am a bit concerned that all these old lady names will make the kids so easily identifiable as having been born in these particular few years....like oh remember in 09 when it was really fashionable to call your child one of those hideous elderly aunt names???

Ethel is really hideous.

AmeliaR · 30/08/2009 20:29

My grandma was Ethel! Kind of old-fashioned, but those kinda names are coming back into fashion aren't they? Not sure I'd be brave enough though

TabithaTwitchet · 30/08/2009 20:27

Makes me think of Just William - it was his glamorous elder sister.
But from a purely euphonic point of view, I don't like it.

jellybeans · 30/08/2009 13:38

Old lady

Pingpong · 30/08/2009 10:03

no not my cup of tea at all - sorry

Polgara2 · 30/08/2009 08:55

Well I like it but it was my mum's name so I may be just being a but sentimental. She was always called Ett or Ettie tho.

MaryBS · 30/08/2009 08:37

Has anyone seen the film Shakespeare in Love? in there, Shakespeare talks about writing a play called "Ethel the pirate's daughter".

SammyK · 30/08/2009 08:24

Don't like Ethel but I do know a little Elsie who is adorable and definately suits her name.

southernbelle77 · 30/08/2009 06:35

Oh no, not for me! It is one of those old lady names that should never have been 'in' and certainly shouldn't be making a revival!
Definitely eastenders and pug-faced dog images which isn't right!!

Silvj · 30/08/2009 03:13

Bethel is far prettier.

It's a ridiculous name.

BroodyChook · 26/08/2009 14:32

Not keen I'm afraid, unless it's for a chicken.

foxytocin · 26/08/2009 14:30

lovely Anglo-saxon name.

Gateau · 26/08/2009 14:26

Get her little pug-faced dog called Willie, and the image is complete.
The name conjures up two images for me: one of little Ethel in the Eastenders of yore and another of a grim-faced fishwife in a headscarf and curlers.

I don't like it much, nor Hilda. I do like Edith, nn Edie, and I love Stella and Elsie.

raggie · 26/08/2009 11:28

I like it. Think it's sweet.

spudmasher · 25/08/2009 21:25

Nah. Witchy.

Anste · 25/08/2009 21:19

You can't burden your child with that! Would you like to be named Ethel?
