What do you think of Osian?

What do you think of Osian as a boy's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

I have a friend whose baby is called Osian, I love it. I had never heard it before him, but apparently it is getting more and more popular in Wales (his mum is Welsh). They say 'Oshan'

I think at first it sounded odd because it was new to me and then you just get over it and that's what he is called and you don't think about it. I think it sounds very masculine.

What's wrong with it? It's yet another perfectly good, absolutely genuine name that because some people haven't heard of before, they leap to assume it's made up and therefore chavvy or pretentious. The only potential problem is that the poem cycle is spelt 'Ossian', so people might assume that it should have two 's's rather than one, though one looks better, if you ask me.

i know an Osian... Osh-an, his mum is welsh and he is absolutely lovely!!!!! He is usually called Osh... Go for it!

I've never come across the Welsh version before, but after practising saying it a few times.. I really reaaly like it! Might have to do alot of correcting/name spelling to ingnoramus's but there are alot of names like that!

Ah, now I get the Ocean thing. It's not pronounced Oh-shan, as it's a short 'O', like in otter.

I like Oisin as in Osh-een, with a soft O, but if Osian is pron. Oh - shian, then it's a bit too much like Ocean, which is a made-up downmarket 'C' word name - sorry. (though it's better for a boy than a girl, esp. if you can argue that it's a proper Welsh name)

I think Oisin is "osh een" (or ush een) and Osian is more like "osh an".

Oisin sounds nice. Osian sounds like part of the Caucasus/Georgia etc that is always being fought over.

Its from Welsh mythology My daughters named after Osians love.

I like it. I know an Oisin. It's definitely a name you have to hear if you;re not familiar with it ... the first times you see it written it's like "eh?? what?"

I prefer Oisin, which I love. But if you're Welsh then I would understand using Osian which is also nice.
