Mavis

This is the name we have for our daughter who is due next week.
We haven't told any friends or family yet. I was very confident of our choice but now am having last minute nerves about it.
What do you think? Nobody remembers the Coronation Street Mavis, do they?
Honest opinions please. I don't think I will change my mind, but want to be prepared for reactions whatever they may be.
Dc1 is Annabel and nearly everybody has always liked this, so will want dd to have the same nice experience if possible.

Annabel is a pretty name and if your DD doesn't like it in later years she has the options of Anna, Belle or Bella. Mavis (an ugly name IMO)leaves your DD with no other options.

SOLOisMeredithGrey · 05/08/2009 14:18

My Dd has a pretty and unusual name and whilst it stops most people in their tracks, most of them love it, others don't, but at least it is pretty and not hard...Mavis seems kind of gravelly.

I've not heard of 'v' being trendy I have to say. It's a very hard sound in the middle of a name IMO.

piscesmoon · 05/08/2009 14:15

I think people should ask some of these old ladies what they think about their names first! I know a Mavis, Freda, Elsie and a Hilda and they all hate them and always have!

I think it's awful. Some old lady names should be left firmly in the past. Ethel and Mavis being two of the key ones.

hughsieoxf · 05/08/2009 13:20

Mavis is gorgeous! It's got the trendy 'v' and the 'is' ending, what more could you want? People will love it on baby and won't think of anything but her.

MaElsie · 05/08/2009 12:49

I'm afraid I do remember the Coronation St Mavis, and since then have always wondered how babies can be called Mavis (unless born with blond curls and giant earrings).
Sorry, not my cup of tea, but your choice.

random · 05/08/2009 12:44

Its awful sorry

SOLOisMeredithGrey · 05/08/2009 12:41

Maeve is definitely a prettier name. I'd never have said Mavis was cute or an elegant name.

I've never seen Corrie either, but I think everyone knows the 'I don't really knowww' connection because of Les Dennis!

Firawla · 05/08/2009 11:19

i think maeve would work better personally cos its seen as less of an "old lady name"
but i have seen people use mabel, so if your that set on mavis im sure you could get away with it, its on the same lines as mabel i think

branflake81 · 05/08/2009 11:15

Ooooh Well I don't really know.....

mopsyflopsy · 04/08/2009 22:00

I like Mavis - cute for a girl and elegant for a woman - but then I've never watched Coronation Street...

piscesmoon · 04/08/2009 21:53

No-it goes with Muriel,Mabel,Maud and Mildred-all dreadful.

hester · 04/08/2009 21:48

I like it a lot. I suspect lots of people won't, though.

MavisGrind · 04/08/2009 21:33

I really like it, but then again I would say that

hambo · 04/08/2009 21:27

I love it.

Little Mavis!

Good luck!

pickyvic · 04/08/2009 21:26

nooooo, nooooooo noooooo!

mavis was either a dithering fool in corrie or the name mentioned in every Mansun song including stripper vicar.....

sorry but really not keen! love old fashioned names - DD has one - but not that one!

NotanOtter · 04/08/2009 21:26

really really adorable
maeve too popular

mavis über cool

moffat · 04/08/2009 21:25

I would prefer Maeve, Mavis makes me think of Corrie

Issy123 · 04/08/2009 21:19

Not overly keen and I like the old fashioned names, both my DS's have them.

I think you need to expect that you may not have a postive reaction from family etc, but don't let that stop you!!!

HerHonesty · 04/08/2009 21:08

noooooooooooo

macherie · 04/08/2009 21:04

I agree it's not fair to call dd1 such a pretty name as Annabel, and your dd2 sech an unusual name as Mavis.

I would think again, sorry.

pranma · 04/08/2009 21:02

A mavis is a bird I think[blackbird?thrush?]there is a Burns poem/song which has the lines:
I have heard the mavis singing
A lovesong to the moon
It's a pretty name I think.

GirlsAreLoud · 04/08/2009 20:59

I honestly think that Mavis will grow up being really envious of Annabel's pretty and normal name.

Dodgy ground, on a serious note I think most parents strive to treat their offspring equally and I don't think it's fair to give one a normal name and one a dodgy one.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 04/08/2009 20:57

It's not awful imo, but doesn't really go with Annabel
