Nervous about the name!

So DH and I have been really struggling with a name for our first baby boy due September. Friends and family have hated all the names that we have shared so far and so we are keeping this one to ourselves as we have fallen in love with it!

I'm a bit nervous to even say it out loud but am curious to test it out and I wonder what everyone thinks on here?

It's Bhodi. We'd call him Bo fo short. Our last name is a real tongue twister- quite Germanic with harsh T and K sounds so we needed something soft and short...

I agree with gladders (prefer the Bodie spelling as more people will "get" this)

However I think Bo is fine for both boys and girls.

cthea - thanks until then I had been going bow-dee as in tie a bow or bow-dee as in bow down.

So it's the first one then!

I actually really like it. I have a name (in fact two) that have to be spelt but love my unusual name.

PS lots of names are rubbish if you anaylse them too much and my DS has a really 'normal' name which my mum hates (thanks mum), but who cares!

No worries KristinaM it's good to know people's thoughts. It's good practice for me and I'm gaining confidence.
I also keep thinking about when we go through the baby name books and say yes, yuck, yes, could work, yuck, it's such a personal thing isn't it and what's right for one isn't for the rest. I do need to get the image of fat civil servant in cheap suit called Bo out of my head though- too funny Seeker

am not normally a fan of unusual names, but this one could work.

personally think i would spell it Bodie - you stand more chance of people getting it right then?

Thanks again guys, I also appreciate the honesty from those who don't love it. Good pratice for when we tell people- it might be a marmite name!

Actually DH is from California and an amazing snowboarder we're moving back there after Bo is here so I like that some of you think it fits with that kind of lifestyle!

I agree that spelling could be a challenge but I'm OK with that. I have such a common name and still have to spell it Y/I/IE...

I guess that I'm not naming my little one with the thoughts of him being a tesco supervisor although if it makes him happy that's fine...Thanks though Seeker, I have no experience of naming so those are good thoughts.

You/he will have to spell it all his life for people, but I think it's a small price to pay for a lovely name and as he'll be spelling out his surname anyway then it's fine.

One of my boys has a name which will always have to be spelt and pronounced a couple of times every time he meets someone new. It is a bit annoying, but of course friends and family all learn it pretty quickly. I always tell people what it rhymes with to help them out. So you could say he's called Bhodi which rhymes with Jody (does it?).

I think you're VERY wise not to tell friends and family until it's too late for them to be rude and have an opinion. I found this deeply hurtful first time round and vowed never to canvass opinions again.

Sorry I think it is vile and people will raise their eyebrows when you tell them and the poor little sod will constantly be asked how to spell it.

And Bo is an ok name for a girl but not for a boy - my boss was called Boe but his name was Bhodisattwa and it never really fit a middle aged banker with a beer belly and no hair!

Mind you if it is possible your kid could be tall, blonde and spend his life with a skateboard or surf bopard attached to his feet it would be ok.

Use it - IF you think your ds won't mind having to say "No not, Bodie, no, nor Body - it's Bhodi" every single time he gives his name for the rest of his life.

Use it - if you think it's OK for a middle aged Civil Servant with thinning hair and a growing paunch.

Use it - if you think it would be OK for a nervous, shy, slightly spotty 11 year old on his first day at Secondary school.

Use it - if you think it would be OK for a shift supervisor trying to assert his authority over a team of stroppy teenage shelf stackers in Tesco.

Thanks everyone, I reall appreciate your thoughts. I'm pretty confident that we're going to go with it. We adore Bo and Bodhi/Bhodi(still a decision there)so many thanks for your input.

Only ever seen it spelt Bodie before. I think people will struggle with the spelling and pronunciation.

I love the name but I must admit that I love Point Break! I toyed with the name Bodhi when I was pregnant (had a DD though so my eclectic mix of boys' names didn't get any use)....

I prefer the Bodhi spelling...

Just be prepared for people to ask whether you're a surfer!
