Alice or Julia?

Hi, I would appreciate honest opinions!

Am a bit torn between.. Alice, Isabel and Julia for expected DS who turns out to be a probable DD....

What do you think? My hesitation with Alice is that it is becoming more popular and isn't really that exciting, Isabel = already very popular but I like the nn Izzy, Julia= would it seem strange on a baby?

mrsbadger thank you for pointing out that phantom R, I hadn't noticed!

Am very surprised that the reaction to Julia is so positive! I was expecting some negativity!! Come on! help me out!

Actually I think Julia is now front-runner, so thanks for your input. Does anyone out there hate it?

I do love Isabel but it's very popular atm and I do think Alice has a very pretty soft sound to it, but possibly Julia would be more unique as a lot of people like Alice..

DH likes Julia Charlotte... any thoughts on that? or alternatives?

Thank you!!

i think there all very nice i know three babys born this year called isabel, alice is lovely but i think its going to be very popular you only have to read the threads on here to see how many people love it, julia is not as well used at the moment but depends if this an issue for you. i would choose whichever you love the most.

hocuspontas · 22/07/2009 11:13

Love Alice (dd1's name) but Julia was also on our list! It's instantly recognisable, everyone knows how to spell it and it's not popular atm. Go for Julia!

MrsBadger · 22/07/2009 11:04

re middle names, Julia Alice has a phantom R - don't do it

both are lovely in their own right though

loobylu3 · 22/07/2009 11:02

They are all lovely names sockmonster.
Isabel is beautiful and I think it is classic name. I just think people get a little tired of hearing v popular names.
Alice is gorgeous (my sister's name which I have always loved). Julia is also beautiful and classic.

liliputlady · 21/07/2009 21:33

Julia - haven't met any little ones called that.

serinBrightside · 21/07/2009 20:50

Love Julia.

electra · 21/07/2009 16:48

Julia

LittleMissTuffet · 21/07/2009 16:47

Alice isn't popular where I live but I think it's a beautiful name.

abitclueless · 21/07/2009 16:39

I love Alice but as you say it's getting v. popular. Isabel is too popular for my liking. Julia is lovely, I would go with that

sockmonster · 21/07/2009 16:26

Hmm DH likes Annabel, but alas my mother is named Ann and I'd rather avoid naming anyone after her!!!

I never considered Scottish pronunciation, I can now hear it in a glasweigan accent and am not sure !

Still thinking Isabel as well.. is it so popular that it is unusable now or do you think it is classic enough to withstand a popularity surge and not sound awfully dated in 10 years time?

Not that keen on Alice, Isabel and Julia are much nicer. Although Isabel is as popular as Alice. More perhaps. I like Annabel too. And tbh, I prefer Juliet to Julia, but of your options, definitely Julia I think.

meep · 21/07/2009 15:16

Yup you get a lot of Joolyuhs !

Fimbo · 21/07/2009 15:15

LOL Meep, it's a bit like Carl that always comes out sounding like Carol.

piscesmoon · 21/07/2009 15:12

Both nice but prefer Juliet.

meep · 21/07/2009 15:11

phew - not just me then Fimbo - must be a Scottish thing!

Fimbo · 21/07/2009 15:10

Alice

I am Scottish and find Julia difficult to say properly.

I like Juliette.

Glynne · 21/07/2009 15:09

Alice and Julia both very nice. Juliet aslo lovely.

Isabel good but too populat cureently.

meep · 21/07/2009 15:09

I had to pitch in and say that when you are a young nervous child and they go round the class asking what your name is, "Julia" is really difficult to say - but in my very unbiased opinion it is a lovely name

LynetteScavo · 21/07/2009 15:05

Alice...bar far the best of the 3.

regularlyoverwhelmed · 21/07/2009 15:05

Alice - beautiful name, eve though I have know two unpleasant Alices I still love the name, which says a lot doncha think?!

Julie also nice, but not as cool as Alice - it just has a wonderful ring to it - don't think is TOO popular either

LouMacca · 21/07/2009 15:04

My daughter is Sophie Alice and she is dark like me but was born with very fair hair! Don't think it matters. Maybe you are thinking of Alice in Wonderland?

Julia (and Juliet) was also one of the names on our list

mais · 21/07/2009 15:02

My dd is Alicia, like you I don't like Aleeeesha, I think my dad had the hardest time trying to pronounce it but my gran(90 years old) got it right first time!

Annnyyhooww... Alice or Julia? My dd would have been Alice but a close neighbour has a dd Alice so thought I couldn't have same really, so I do like Alice but being really unhelpful here, I like Julia too.

sockmonster · 21/07/2009 14:34

loumacca I like Julia Alice! I hadn't even thought of that (duh?)

mais DH loves the name Alicia but I would hate it to be pronounced 'aleesha'

Do you think a Julia should be dark and an Alice should be fair? or would it not matter? I am dark, DH fair, could be anything...!

I think all your choices are lovely. I would tend to use Alice as a middle name. Julia Alice is lovley.
