Freya - overused - however a pretty name
Isabel - middle aged Scottish spinster with perm
Summer - no. Don't like at all.
Iris - A beautiful name and one of my favourites.
Kitty - as a diminutive of Katharine, yes. As a named on its own, no.

Faye - no. Too fey.
Esther - Another lovely name.
Jemima - it's a duck's name.

Ralph - sounds like being sick, Rafe pronounciation pretentious imo.
Thomas - boring
Finlay - common
P eter - a nice boys name, but not too exciting
Zachary - no, overused and a little sod's name
Freddie - prefer Frederick
Ellis - funnily enough I think of this as a girl's name
Conal - hmm, not sure. OK I think
Rory - dog's name.
Ezra - very old man with a drinking problem

Sorry - some of these assumptions are silly, just put down my initial thoughts. Did you actually ask for the rambling streams of consciousness of a random mumsnetter!

On this my faves are Iris and Esther, and Freddie and Peter

poppysocks · 24/06/2009 20:58

Freya - Nice, but very much of recent years. How many middle aged Freyas do you know? Suspect it will fall out of favour fairly soon.
Isabel- Lovely. Nn Issy great too. Like that spelling.
Summer- Chavtastic. Eastenders. Nice idea though.
Iris- Murdoch, flower. Somehow rather hard and unattractive though.
Kitty- Hello-, -Cat.
Rose- Lovely, classic, but would inevitably be Rosie.
Faye- Awful. Wet, wimpy.
Esther- Hard name. Not attractive. Not sure why.
Jemima- Lovely, but with a lingering hint of puddleduck.

Ralph- Lovely, but only when pronounced Rafe. Correcting mispronounciation for a lifetime would be excrutiating.
Thomas- Classic, although popular. Love, love, love Tom.
Finlay- Like Freya, suspect it will date. Finn though is great.
Peter- ok. Bit boring but classic.
Zachary- Naff. American, particularly when Zak.
Freddie- Fred much better.
Ellis- Bit ambiguous.
Conal- Quite like.
Rory- Great. Bit too close to Roy though.
Ezra - The -a at the end could be mistaken for a girls' name.

myredcardigan · 24/06/2009 20:31

Freya -lovely name but very popular.
Isabel -ditto though I prefer it spelt with an o
Summer - The only one on your list that I dislike.
Iris - pretty and plain in a nice way.
Kitty - Fab. I'd shorten it from Katherine but sounds great on its own too. Makes me think equally of a toddler with crazy curls and a professional grown-up woman.
Rose - The middle name of choice it seems though a lovely name nevertheless. Though I do love Rosalind.
Faye - Blonde and 70s but nothing wrong with that.
Esther - Classy and underused
Jemima- She's always going to be cool and well educated.

Ralph - Ok but Judy Blume is always there!
Thomas - Lovely name but again really popular.
Finlay - Good name
Peter - Ok
Zachary - Good strong name
Freddie - Not my favourite but ok
Ellis - Sounds too American but maybe that't just me!
Conal - Good strong name (again)
Rory - Love this name! Makes me think of a tall good looking Scot though the two I know are both English! (but both v.good looking!)
Ezra - The only one I've met has been a woman though I think it is a Jewish boys name.

pmsl at SimpleSusan - many of those are spot on for me!

simplesusan · 20/06/2009 23:36

Freya- As an adult wears long, floral skirts with sensible sandals. Has long unfashionable hair and lives by the sea, with her cat which she took in as a stray. Enjoys painting.
Isabel- highly strung, very thin suspects husband of having an affair, which he is with his secretary.
Summer- hippy chick
Iris- boheimian. Very happy living in expensive town house with husband and several kids.
Kitty- Was a blond curly haired child. But became reclusive after her beloved parents divorced.
Rose- Dark haired, cheerful sort. Seperated from husband but never got around to finalising the divorce. Likes to re-cycle and "make" lots of craft stuff for the house.
Faye- Spent most of her life wishing she was someone else.
Esther- The charity worker
Jemima- Successful children's author. Doesn't care much for her old friends whom she finds rather too common for her new found life as a celebrity.

Ralph- Dark, hansome chap. Always popular and friendly at his public school. Has had several girlfriends but is secretly gay. Has a huge pad in the country where he hosts parties for his male friends.
Thomas- Cheeky as a boy. married and works in insurance.
Finlay- blond haired child. Now has dyed streaks in his hair. Moved around the country with his parents. Has lots of friends but quite unsettled and cannot make a career for himself.
Peter- born to an elder father and younger mother. Continued his childhood love of trains and still has his collection in the converted loft. Still lives with his mother, his father passed away. His mum makes him sandwiches to take to work. Wears a green tank top, glasses and hair parted down the side.
Zachary-The most annoying child in the class. Only his young, pierced, tatooed mother liked him. Grew up to be a looser. Neighbours planning a street party when he is finally evicted from his housing association property.
Freddie- totally annoynomous child. married the first woman who showed any interest. devoted to his child, disillusioned wife refuses to have any more kids to him and is planning to leave as soon as said child is grown up.
Ellis- Good looking with a fashionable girfriend.
Conal- English parents with a vague Irish connectin( 6 generations back)
Rory- became a drop out and sleeps rough
Ezra- Flamboyant, wealthy, single.

Rolf · 20/06/2009 22:54

I've just read the other comments. I think the most damning is "Peter - nothing springs to mind at all" . Still love it though.

LaDiDaDi · 20/06/2009 22:27

Ooh, what a great list of names

Freya - v pretty. Less post than it used to be, but not in a bad way!
Isabel - lovely name but there are a lot of them.
Summer -not keen. Too fey and floaty
Iris - ok, like the idea and the flower but not a particularly attractive word
Kitty - nice alternative to/abbreviation for Catherine. Or is it a bit too scullery maid? Not sure.
Rose- nice but used quite a lot atm - not necessarily a problem
Faye - don't like this at all. I hear it in a whiny estuarine accent
Esther - lovely
Jemima - love this name. We almost used it for DD2.

Ralph - nice name but can't avoid thinking of it as a name for a willy (as in Judy Blume's Forever)
Thomas - brilliant name. I have one!
Finlay - good name but it could date - there seem to be a lot of them atm
P eter - lovely name. Rolls off the tongue nicely.
Zachary - v nice name but I think it's a bit chavvy, sorry.
Freddie - lovely but would use it as a shortform of Frederick. Bermuda shorts and pudding-basin haircut and rosy cheeks. Could end up a fat merchant banker though!
Ellis - not keen
Conal - great name. Strong masculine but also creative
Rory - I like this one too.
Ezra - hmm, not so sure. It wouldn't suit many people and you'd have to have a very strong instinct that it was the right name when you meet the baby.

SarahL2 · 20/06/2009 19:23

Freya - 2 friends have beautiful little girls called Freya

Kitty - a cat. A nickname not a proper name
Rose - my neice
Faye - nice

Ellis - surname
