Jay is a proper boy's name in Welsh in its own right (I think).

My clarinet teacher is called Jay (he is Welsh) - he is such a talented dude and is so inspirational. Therefore, now when I think of the name I associate it with those two qualities and I really like the name.

iwouldgoouttonight · 03/06/2009 11:33

It makes me think of Jay in Eastenders!

I know a female Jay.

Sunshinemummy · 03/06/2009 11:24

I used to love the name Jay until Jay-zee came along and now it seems a bit hip hop.

I do have a friend with a DS Jago which I think is lovely.

My ds is a Jason, Jay is a common shortening for that (although he prefers Jas). Jays are pretty awful birds (eaters of baby birds etc) despite their bright colouring, so I don't think I'd call a child after one of them. But "j"s were out of the question for us, so a bit academic.

I really like it. It's like Robin, a subtle nature name.

I don't think it's chav at all. Jayden yes, but Jay is nice.

feedthegoat · 02/06/2009 23:31

My dh's nephew is called Jay.I wasn't sure at first but it suits him but I do like short names. I also know a woman called Jay.

Tinker · 02/06/2009 23:27

I think of Jay Osmond (am old) or Jay Rayner (yuk). Are lots of older Jays really Jasons?

JoPie · 02/06/2009 10:50

My DS is Jacob, but known to everyone as Jay. I love it.

Tommy · 01/06/2009 21:40

I have an Uncle Jay - short for Jeremy so I always think of that.

I know one little boy called Jay - he is sweet but the name is a bit short for me. I prefer a name that you could shorten if you wanted

fucksticks · 01/06/2009 21:40

I'm surprised its so liked. To me it seems exactly like Jayden ie. chav central

fannybanjo · 01/06/2009 21:38

My DH is Jay and if he turns out anything as wonderful and lovely as him, then you will be proud of having a Jay.

bargainhuntingbetty · 01/06/2009 21:37

Love it, love it, love it. I am a creche worker and I did a creche for a wee boy called Jay and I absolutely loved the name. I hadnt heard it before and I LOVE it. Go for it.

Lulubee · 01/06/2009 21:34

I think's?

Lulubee · 01/06/2009 21:33

Always have loved the name, and then I ended up marrying one! I think's it's funky and quite 'cool' - also reminds me of the bird, which is one of the prettiest birds around.

cthea · 01/06/2009 10:00

No, not Jayden.

AuntyAnna · 01/06/2009 09:58

Love for a boy, dislike Jayden

LoveBuckets · 31/05/2009 22:43

Like it for a girl, as a bird name. Don't like it for a boy because it sounds like the initial - when I was a yoof drugdealers tend to be known just by their initial so I have that peculiar connotation.

Hassled · 31/05/2009 20:09

I know a Jay named after Jay Gatsby - I think it's a nice name.

wahwahwah · 31/05/2009 20:07

Homer Simpson!

lotspot · 31/05/2009 20:04

i know a 17 year old Jay who suits it quite well

i always feel it should be short for something though - quite like it as short for a name becginning with the letter J eg James or Jennifer rather tha names with Jay in them - dunno why

Ponders · 31/05/2009 19:10

I know a female Jay (aged 24)

Boulders · 31/05/2009 19:09

I like it but really dislike Jayden.

boodleboot · 31/05/2009 12:26

i quite like it because i really like bird names...
