What do you think of Margaret?
I love Peggy as a nn, and also Maggie, but not sure aabout Margaret, I have never met oe under the age of 30!! (so due a revival possibly?)
i think the nn fit well with siblings but not the full name, but dont think Maggie or Peggy on the birth certificate is a good idea.
So would love some opinions, thanks

How about Margarita? I think it's quite.. sparky? Call her Maggie, Margot or Rita?

Hmm.. then again, is that like calling your kid bacardi?

There would have been so many pet names because it was such a common name-it would differentiate.

There's probably a good reason for all those pet names for Margaret.

DH and I both had both our Grandmothers called Margaret, mostly known as Maggie. My sister is Margaret, known as Rita. When DD1 was born on sisters birthday, we gave her Margaret as a middle name and now she has called her new DD Margaret, to be known as Meg.

I think Margaret is one of the Great Names, readily adaptable to suit babies, children and grown ups. I would always go for the formal name on the birth certificate. Who knows, your baby could one day be a VIP and want a name with a bit of gravitas.

Oh i love the nn Rita!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is definately one to think about. I think i might prefer it to maggie, but Peg / Peggy still tops.
Agree that it is nice for dc's to be able to pick a nn or full name when they are older, as Peggy is quite girlish and she may want something more serios when older.
I am loving Margaret more and more, thanks folks!

I like it. But then my dd's name is on this thread as an equivalent (or not , so old lady classic names are clearly my thing.

I like both Magie and Meg as diminutives. I use a variety of diminutives with dd, depending on how I feel

but liz (which is what the vast majority of elizabeths will end up as, like it or not) is hardly classy though, is it :P

Not saying it isn't a "classic" - I just don't think it's on a parr with Elizabeth. Elizabeth is a nice name and always has been and probably always will be. Margaret is a raving old biddy's name.

It is a classic-check through history and the census for different periods. This is the first time that it is unpopular. Old lady names like Muriel, Ethel and Ivy have very brief periods of popularity.

shorten it to rita (not joking, dd2 was verrrrry nearly rita)

obsession with proper names is to give kids a choice which form they'd prefer later, seems sensible to me.

Too old lady/middle aged for me. I like Maggie on it's own though. I also don't get the obsessions to use a 'proper' name on birth certificate if you won't use it. Few names are now in their original forms anyway, long or otherwise. Most kids these days have names which originally came from other names. I have a long name, was always shortened, pointless just being 'formal' name at the doctors and during exams etc.

It isn't quite on a par with Elizabeth, Mary,Anne and Jane but it is close behind.

I love it-I don't know why it isn't popular-perhaps to do with Maggie Thatcher. I think Maggie is nice but not Peggy. It is a classic name.

Was about to suggest Margeurite but then realised I couldn't even spell it (that's my best guess above!). I like Margaret though haven't heard of any LOs called it recently and if push came to shove might have the same reservations as you. (though if my neighbour can call her daughter Elsie then anything is poss)

I know a 25 year-old Maggie who's the life of the party! Also a Mary-Margaret who's anything but dowdy...
