I love Ted but DH hates Edward (too posh for us apparently )

Are there any other names we can use instead?

I know a man called Allan who has always been known as Ted
no idea why. Even his wife and mum call him Ted

Tommy · 20/04/2009 22:47

no - they all thought it was cool!

LizzyIzzyLou · 20/04/2009 22:45

Did he ever get teased because of being called Ted Tommy?

I once had a boy in my class who had Ted as a nickname. His real name was Michael

bigted · 20/04/2009 22:33

lizzy, yes, people often comment on what a great name he has

Clary · 20/04/2009 00:00

My dad was Ted, shortened from Edwin if that's any help.

I know some Teds now tho who are just Ted.

LOL @ Ted Ermintrude.

singersgirl · 19/04/2009 11:52

Grimble, that is very funny!

LizzyIzzyLou · 19/04/2009 11:35

Do you get a good reaction to the name bigted?

My Ted has a short surname and no middle name

jellybeans · 18/04/2009 16:48

I think Ted works great with a short surname. It's a good name on it's own. Lol at Ermuntrude, I thought you were considering it too

lol @ Albert Ermintrude. That would certainly get him noticed . I think the whole point is that they are consciously old-fashioned names - Anglo-Saxon in origin and Victorian in terms of most recent popularity - (and Albert is another favourite of mine - I had great-uncles Ted and Albert) so would be better than something modern. Ted Shane? Ted Darren? I don't think so.

If I had another boy I always thought I'd call him Kentigan, just to see peoples' faces when I said he was Mungo for short but DH won't allow it. Maybe just as well. (look him up, he's a Scottish saint)

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 18/04/2009 16:34

Tedbar.

GrimbleTheResourceful · 18/04/2009 16:31

No Lizzy, just kidding.....

LizzyIzzyLou · 18/04/2009 16:29

Just realised you may actually think I'm going to use Ermintrude, I'm not. I was just responding to the poster called Ermintrude

singersgirl, that is bizarre. Our Edward also gets called Teddington and Tedric, often, all the time.

I like Albert but I think you should drop the Ermintrude.

singersgirl · 18/04/2009 16:16

How about Teddington or Tedric ? These are both names that DS1 gets called, though his birth certificate name is Edward. My mum's Uncle Ted was really an Edmund.

LizzyIzzyLou · 18/04/2009 16:09

His middle name would be Albert ermintrude, after my late father.

Do you Ted Albert is too much of an old mans name though?

ermintrude13 · 18/04/2009 16:05

I love Ted and so does DH but he doesn't think it's 'right' as a name on its own, even though we'd call a boy Ted from day 1. And we don't like any of the names for which its a diminutive. However, I did find Tedmund, which is Anglo-Saxon and would match our other DC's names, but DH vetoed that too . Lizzy, you can always give him a 3-syllable 2nd name to compensate

LizzyIzzyLou · 18/04/2009 16:03

I spoke to DH and he likes Ted by itself even with our short surname - yay!!

OP posts:
LizzyIzzyLou · 18/04/2009 16:00

The only problem we have with Ted is that our surname is a one syablle three letter word. So together it sounds a very short name, do you think thats a problem

jellybeans · 18/04/2009 13:13

I would just go for Ted. There is a Teddy near me, not short for anything. Short names are usual now, more common if anything.

monicker2 · 18/04/2009 10:59

Me too! In fact I hate it when I hear of other Teds, but I'll let you off

My other ds is Noah and that's getting really popular too
