Jem

SoupDragon · 28/03/2009 07:26

As others have said, with a J and short for something, it's fine. Odd how a different spelling changes it.

As an aside, if I get a dog it will be Dill to go with Atticus & Scout the cats, Not sure where Jem fits in yet

LtEveDallas · 27/03/2009 22:45

With a J was my No1 name for what turned out to be DD.

DH wasnt 100% but I would have won! With a G was my dogs name! Reckon you could get away with it for a forl but not a lad.

ingles2 · 27/03/2009 22:34

I prefer Jed random

noddyholder · 27/03/2009 22:23

Like the guy in oasis?

janeite · 27/03/2009 22:21

Not liking Gem at all but could go with Jem as short for Jeremy (don't like Jeremy either but Jem alone sounds okay).

random · 27/03/2009 22:18

I like it ...prefer Jed tho

mrsruffallo · 27/03/2009 22:16

No, don't like Jeremy.
Jeremiah is quite nice

AitchTwoOh · 27/03/2009 22:15

it can be a shortening of james also, can't it?

ingles2 · 27/03/2009 22:13

Jem not Gem IMO.
Would you actually call him Jeremy?

mrsruffallo · 27/03/2009 22:11

Yes, the J is fine

I have a Jem, inspired by To Kill a Mockingbird. I, obviously, think it's a fabulous name.

However, I would think of Gem as a girl's name - short for Gemma.

Rozebud · 27/03/2009 22:03

I think it's quite sweet but think it might need to be short for something so he could use a longer name when he is older - I always think how would this sound on a job application! It depends what your surname is, I guess.

I also prefer with a 'J', slighly more masculine, not sure that matters though

suwoo · 27/03/2009 21:44

mrsruffallo, I heart your name threads

suwoo · 27/03/2009 21:44

Lionstar beat me to the Gem from Oasis reference.

mrsruffallo · 27/03/2009 21:42

Oh no,I don't like that hard g

Lionstar · 27/03/2009 21:40

Gem Archer is the rhythym guitarist in Oasis. He pronounces it with a hard G as in 'get'.

Personally I think it sounds a bit girly, but then my sisters named is shortened to Jem.

MaryAnnSailors · 27/03/2009 21:39

Gem is short for Geronimo, yes?

mrsruffallo · 27/03/2009 21:39

Don't know that song Amapoleon-who is it by?

OP posts:
Guadalupe · 27/03/2009 21:36

Blimey, I'd forgotten about those. I longed for a Gem doll.

Guadalupe · 27/03/2009 21:35

I know an 11 year old Jem. It really suits him.

Amapoleon · 27/03/2009 21:35

I'll show my age now. Gem, truly outrageous, truly truly truly outrageous. Well I think the song went like that, the 80's was a long time ago

Sorry that wasn't very helpful.

Stilla · 27/03/2009 21:35

"Jem" is a turkish name - but spelt Cem

differentID · 27/03/2009 21:34

Jem. As a sort for James or Jeremy

LetThemEatCake · 27/03/2009 21:34
