Finnleigh - how best to spell it

This seems to be one of thirty-one spellings and slight variations for this name....

It is my friend's 'boys name' - She asked me "So, how shall I spell it, then?"

MN name experts - pleeeeaaaaase - make me look wewlly cleva and tell me which spelling I should say she should go for and why!?!

Thank you for your time.

Finlay or Findlay.
Finnleigh??? And you are asking us for reasons why we don't like it? ok,

Does she want a child that will go through its whole life having to say 'no actually its spelled f-i-n-n-l-e-i-g-h' and see everyone raise a knowing eyebrow that his mother was trying to give him an exotic name but just ended up with something chavvy and made up.

RachieB - I think her names are just lovely too. If Beanie is a girl she will be Aisha (have I spelt that right?) which sounds simply perfect to me!

Actually, I am terribly jealous of her great taste in names!!!! - I am sure my dd is too!!!!

Blottedcopybook - They are Liverpudlians but I think, like many Liverpudlians her husband's family actually have Irish origins.... mmmmm.... so I wonder if it would make sense to spell the name Finlay?

Finlay.

Blottedcopybook · 06/03/2009 17:33

My son is a Findlay - my understanding is that Finlay is the Irish spelling and Findlay is the Scottish.

Finley just looks wrong to me. Finnleigh?!! I shall reserve judgement!

RachieB · 05/03/2009 22:13

lmao @ Finnleigh !! hideous

definitely Finlay

lovely name

teafortwo · 05/03/2009 21:55

She thinks Finley is her favourite!

Thank you

I will report back my findings and let you know what she goes for - if she sticks with that name at all, at all, at all! We all know what pregnant ladies are like!

pronunciation is the same regardless of spelling i believe.

pagwatch · 05/03/2009 20:42

Finlay

Finnleigh is barking and reminds me of some great grafetti I read once in Oxfordshire

"Keigh-Leigh does it with her dog."

Well it was certainly memorable .

NogginOfRum · 05/03/2009 20:40

I know a Finlee

FAQinglovely · 05/03/2009 20:40

Finlay

LynetteScavo · 05/03/2009 20:40

Finleigh would be a girls name.

LadyPinkofPinkerton · 05/03/2009 20:40

Finlay

LynetteScavo · 05/03/2009 20:39

Finlay or Finley.

Or even Fynnlee.

georgimama · 05/03/2009 20:39

It's Finlay. Never heard of other spelling. the "leigh" ending looks kind of feminine (is that mad?) so that would be why not to me. And the fact that he will be spelling it to people for ever.

teafortwo · 05/03/2009 20:38

ha ha ha - it was high on the list - so I copy and pasted that spelling!!!! I have no attachment to that particular spelling nor does she!!!

So, you all think the most common spellings are Finlay or Finley, then?

But.... Is one Fin-laaaay and one Fin-leeee or are they the same name???

[slightly dense emotion]

finlay

LackaDAISYcal · 05/03/2009 20:36

tis also my DS2.

finley to me looks like the anglicised version of the name, a bit like rhuraidh and rory

Wilts · 05/03/2009 20:33

Because both Finlay or Finley are both correct spellings and Finnleigh looks like it is made up.

RumMum · 05/03/2009 20:33

for some reason I think Finlay looks more of a surname spelling

nickytwotimes · 05/03/2009 20:33

...and the gaelic is Finnlaidh. Or Finlaig.

GetOrfMoiLand · 05/03/2009 20:32

Christ, are you joking with the Finnleigh spelling? No, no, no, Finlay only.

(or Phynn-lea, if you want to be really unique )

ShowOfHands · 05/03/2009 20:32

Phínléa

LackaDAISYcal · 05/03/2009 20:32

Finlay just because it looks nicest.
