This seems to be one of thirty-one spellings and slight variations for this name....

It is my friend's 'boys name' - She asked me "So, how shall I spell it, then?"

MN name experts - pleeeeaaaaase - make me look wewlly cleva and tell me which spelling I should say she should go for and why!?!

Thank you for your time.

My ds is called Finley. Choose to spell it this way because I was worried that if it was spelt Finlay then people would pronounce it Fin-laay which I don't like.
Fyo, there are 2 others at his school - another Finley and a finnley.

Iklboo · 13/03/2009 14:01

DS has a Finlay and a Finley in his class at playschool

Thanks! It may be some time before that happens...

Finlay

rowingboat · 07/03/2009 23:23

I can hear that 'fin - lye' in Bham.
It wasn't that interesting TF2, just a dodgy tummy. I wish I had just swept in from a night dancing on a yacht. Oh well!

DontCallMeBaby · 07/03/2009 21:17

There's Finley in DD's class, and Finlay in the other Reception class. Finlay looks 'right' to me, Finley is in no way bad but does make me think more of a small suburb of somewhere or other, rather than a child.

Finlay would only be pronounced Fin-laaay if you were from Birmingham.

Wilts · 07/03/2009 21:17

Nnibnabs- I have to agree

nobodysfool · 07/03/2009 21:17

My ds1 is a Finlay-his dads choice of spelling but i wanted Finley. My argument was it's not said Fin-laaay it's Fin-lee.His reply was you dont call me Step-hen!Thats where i lost the argument.
TBH we call him Fin most of the time anyway.

teafortwo · 07/03/2009 21:10

Finley. Tis the best name in the world (because I have one!)

LiffeyAndFriends · 07/03/2009 16:48

Findlay or Finley or Finlay.

Finleigh is McIrish to my ear!

Go for Finbar or Fintan and use Fin as a nn.

teafortwo · 07/03/2009 08:09

I am starting to think she should call him Bob.... no spelling issues with that one!

Findlay - I live in Scotland and that's how it is spelt here. It looks wrong without the 'd' to me.
I looked the name up and the Irish version seems to be the fionnlach spelling and the Scottish version is with the 'd'.
Don't ask why I am up at this time!

seeker · 06/03/2009 22:43

It gives them huge private pleasure whenever they call his name and confuses the hell out of the vet!

teafortwo · 06/03/2009 22:26

bwaaah haaa haaa haaaa - fantastic stuff, seeker!

Well... that is why I am asking you lot how best to spell it!

I once taught a girl called....

Shauvaun (???!!!!???)

We saw there are 31 spellings for Finley - and wondered which were the 'proper' and 'normal' spellings... and which were the daft ones.... iyswim.
