Judith or Julia?

I'd love to call my next dd Judith - Jude for short - but I'm worried the full name sounds a little austere. So am thinking of Julia as a 'safer' option. However, not so keen on the nickname 'Jules' which it will inevitably become!

What do people on here think?

I have an aunt Judith and a dreadful MIL also called Judith.

I have never liked the name, but I do like Jude.

The funny thing is when we lived in Germany, they pronounce it 'Yoo-dit' it sounded very sweet for a little girl.

sunshineday · 06/03/2009 18:39

Not to fussed on Judith but Julia is lovely

LavenderStar · 06/03/2009 15:50

I think they both sound very dated but I love Jude.

vesela · 06/03/2009 15:09

I love the name Judith, and don't know why it's not more used.

Julia I find a bit cold.

TheYearOfTheCat · 03/03/2009 22:16

My DS was supposed to be a Julia, so I love it. Also love Juliet.

I have unfortunate associations with Judith, so could not possibly condone calling a baby this.

seeker · 03/03/2009 22:11

Judith - shortened to Jude. Lovely.

LaDiDaDi · 03/03/2009 22:10

Julia.

lotspot · 03/03/2009 22:08

judith i wasn't keen on initially but when put with jude i really like it

i know a julia who is 8 or 9 i think - shes lovely so im quite fond of the name lol
at first i was a bit hmmm thats an odd name for a little girl but now i know her it suits her to a tee - very unusual imo but perfect for the right person
also, im not fond of the nickname jules, but this julia is known simply as julia, so i think if you wanted her to be julia you'd probably get away with it more that something like rebecca which is much more likely to get shorterned

BikeRunSki · 03/03/2009 13:01

Judith - Hate, even though I know two lovely Judiths.

Julia - Love

I went to school with twins called Judith and Juliet.

peanutbutterkid · 03/03/2009 12:38

I'm a Julie and it's very rare that anybody calls me "Jules" (not that I would mind, I like nicknames, and I like it when people use them for me).

mawbroon · 03/03/2009 12:35

Definitely Julia

FrizzBath · 03/03/2009 12:26

Jude is lovely (my SIL's name - but she never EVER uses Judith because she hates it)

Julia is my mum's name and I've always loved it.

Juliet is my boss's name so now I feel a bit about it though I used to love it!

Bella73 · 03/03/2009 12:24

I love Judith, really love it, I would definitely prefer it to Julia (as I really don't like the shortening Julie or Jules). I have used Juliana as a middle name, so that's nice too but Judith is really really nice, unusual without being difficult to spell or pronounce, has a lovely meaning as someone already pointed out.... go for it! Of course your dd will carry it off with style and character

choosyfloosy · 03/03/2009 12:20

I absolutely love Judith, and also Juliet.

Julia has a very particular flavour to me which I don't personally like, but I can see why others do.

Julian for a girl is also possible but more unusual - probably too unusual at the moment, i certainly wouldn't have used it.

upagumtree · 03/03/2009 10:02

I Love love love Julia! That's the girls name we picked when i was pregnant with dc1. But he was a boy and we called him David. Also love the Beatles song called "Julia" too. One of my all time favourites and if i had a girl called julia i would sing it to her all the time...that's never gonna happen though now

Scarletibis · 03/03/2009 09:42

Jude is good. Also Julieanne, Juliet. Judith seems a bit late-middle aged to me and Julia a bit ordinary.

EyeballsintheSky · 03/03/2009 09:17

I love Judy and it's on my shortlist should I ever need one! Not so wild about Judith but would use it as full for Judy.

Am liking Julia as well though. I hadn't thought of that...

BonsoirAnna · 03/03/2009 08:55

Julia is a million times nicer than Judith.

troutpout · 03/03/2009 08:50

Judith is beautiful
Julia is very ordinary

frazzledoldbag · 03/03/2009 08:42

I prefer Julia and also love Juliet.
Don't like Judith at all - it sounds quite 'hard' (to me anyway).
What about Trudie / Trudy if you like the Jude / Judy sound? (I know a gorgeous baby Trudy)......

CherryChoc · 02/03/2009 23:52

I love Judith and Judy. I used to like Judy Bloom books and always admired her name!

steviesgirl · 02/03/2009 23:51

What about Juliana as an alternative? Lovely version of Julia imo.

Tinker · 02/03/2009 23:36

Julia is beautiful I think. I think of Diana Quick in Brideshead.

Jude sounds too boyish and Judith is horrible

Leo9 · 02/03/2009 23:25

I think Judith is beautiful - really stylish. And Jude is a lovely shortening that will suit from a little girl to a cool teenager! Go for it.

Missmodular · 02/03/2009 22:26

Thanks for your feedback! Judith seems to be a name that, on the right person, can really work - thing is, will I be able to tell if my little dd will be the right person when she's born? I guess I'll have to wait and see!
