Samuel, Harvey or Gabriel

You may see or of seen i posted yesterday that a family member has used our original choice that we settled on which was Harry.

I was exceptionally gutted, however after 24 hours I have come to realise just how popular it is and am now glad to be looking at other options. Harry is definatley struck off of the list!

Gabriel is dp's first choice for a boy and always has been (Gabe for short). In the past i vetoed it (and i really dispised it) - but admit it has grown on me. Although i know nobody else will even like it) Including step dd (14), my family, some of his family and friends. .(probably why i disliked it so much 5 years ago)

Harvey and Samuel we both love and family have all agreed they're lovely.

Nope it is sticking - if i look at the name book one more time it'll be in the flipping bin!

I knew a Stefan who was called Stephanie and even a Harry who people called Harriet, and a Henry - Henrietta when just wanting to be cruel! Kids will get picked on i suppose no matter what their name/ surname.

DP loves it, it is his first choice and as he says he is built like a brick poo house, so if people want to pick on his sons name, they'll have him to deal with .

We have a Gabriel and he gets called Gabes a lot. His older brother calls him Gabriella

MumOfBaby · 02/03/2009 17:03

Gabriel will get called Gabrielle though, won't he? And probably wont' be too chuffed with that. It is quite feminine. Gabe isn't feminine though.

Malachy's nice.

Tidey · 02/03/2009 17:03

I was about to say all three names are gorgeous, but I see you've made a decision already.

Gabriel Henry is a lovely name, don't pay any attention to people trying to talk you out of it - if it's what you've decided on, their opinions count for nowt.

This is why we waited until the DC were born before telling people their names.

TiggyR · 02/03/2009 16:59

Luke and Lewis yuk! I can never hear the name Luke without thinking 'Liverfluke'. Don't know why, just find it sounds ugly. I agree Sam is a bit too common now (as in popular, not naff) Harvey is very common (as in common common!) I love Gabriel. It was on my shortlist for DS3 who is nearly 10 - it was pretty unheard of then but I imagine it's much more popular now.

How about Lorcan, Lachlan or Malachy? They were also on my shortlist but as I haven't used them in ten years I may as well pass them on!

MumOfBaby · 02/03/2009 16:19

Sam/ Samuel is just too popular and I actually don't like it.

Harvey is very Jordan.

Gabriel is the nicest, but I think you should spend some more time thinking of names. How about Luke or Lewis or something? Maybe even Harrison.

Wolfblass · 02/03/2009 13:00

Well decision is made and it's Gabriel Henry (Henry after dp's grandad)

My sisters are hating the name Gabriel and i've had a barrage of texts this morning with alternatives.

TOUGH!!!!!!!! It is flipping well staying!

What can i say though, my sister is due in April and her shortlist is :

Girl: Taylor or Lily (Lily i love but think she will opt for the former)

Boy: Jay Dylan or Jayden [hmmm}

But thanks again!

Both Gabriel and Samuel are lovely names!

paolosgirl · 01/03/2009 20:28

Very good choice - strong, traditional with just a little bit of a twist. You have the go-ahead from me (grin)

Wolfblass · 01/03/2009 12:51

Gabriel Henry?? (Henry after dp's grandad)

lunamoon2 · 01/03/2009 10:58

Gabriel would be my first choice-although I don't know anyone else in RL who likes it!

Samuel is good too.

Don't like Harvey, only personal choice as it reminds me of a boy who I was at school with.

Wolfblass · 01/03/2009 10:07

Well i am so glad people are honest with me and agree with my original 'CH' thoughts for Harvey

I think i have now settled into Gabriel - i've alos put it out to the test on a smaller forum i go on and was surprised by how many people love it!

Also my parents text last night and said they love Gabriel if we decide on that, but would shorten it to Gabe! . I hadn;t even mentioned it to them but i think they knew dp will always have it as a choice for his first son!

Thanks so much for your opinions! They are gratefully recieved.

Now just need to find a good middle name!

TheSonnetts · 28/02/2009 22:27

I love Gabriel.It is a lovely name.

Samuel OK but there are alot of Sams about.

I also don't like Harvey at all.

janeite · 28/02/2009 20:04

Gabriel is fabbo. Samuel is fine: just a nice, solid name. I don't like Harvey at all though, sorry.

bodiddly · 28/02/2009 20:02

I love Gabriel, quite like Samuel but am not a fan of Harvey I am afraid. I agree with Poppyscock I think!

Poppyscock · 28/02/2009 19:36

Oh well maybe I'm out of date

Wolfblass · 28/02/2009 19:07

Poppyscock - i originally thought that but people told me they didn't thin of it as ahem chavy...lol

OP posts:
iwontbite · 28/02/2009 18:44

well i am biased, cos Ih ave a Gabriel myself, so obv think it's a lvoely name!

I am not overly keen on Harvey, but I love Samuel
Sam is pretty popular, but I haven't come across many people who actually use the full version, so a Samuel would make a nice change

LunarSea · 28/02/2009 18:25

More Harvey's and Gabriel's around here than Samuel. I'd go with Samuel as being more classic though - suspect the other two will become very much names of their time.

Poppyscock · 28/02/2009 18:19

Harvey is quite > chavy IMO
