Ariadne

Hi there. I'm due quite soon with DD2 and am considering Ariadne which is a name I really love.
We are not Greek but I love classical Greek names. DD1 is Iris.
Is Ariadne too much and too long compared with Iris amd generally too much of a tongue twister??
Surname is also 3 syllables.
What do you think?

I agree that it would get shortened. I don't know if you can have any control over the nickname as I would prefer Addie/ Adne or even Ria to Ari which isn't v nice!

I really like it but its a bit long for me - I like shorter names. Get the feeling that people would try and shorten it - Ari?

I like Ariadne too but am not keen on Ari (which it will be inevitably shortened to) - how are you with that?

It was Arietty in The Borrowers.

I love the name Ariadne. I think you should go for it.

At 2.5 my daughter could pronounce all kinds of ridiculous names on children's TV programmes because they capture her imagination. She can say Rhinocerous and Hippopotamus and Higgity-Piggity. Ariadne is not really that challenging by comparison. The other children may call her Addie until they reach 3 or 4 but that is quite normal. It will probably be quite fun pronouncing it at first.

You love the name.

Yes, I agree daisy 5. I think it's a shame to restrict the names you choose to all short/ all long. I was just a bit worried that this name would be a bit of a tongue twister for a small child to pronounce!!

It's a beautiful name. People mispell all kinds of names, even the simple ones And nicknames can come from anywhere - we call our daughter Pickle! If you like it, use it. It is beautiful and not so common which I think is nice, to feel a little unique. I like the fact it is longer than Iris as I don't go for this short name with short name belief.

The only negative connotation of Ariadne in one version of the myth is that, once she had betrayed her father and helped Theseus to escape both Ariadne and her brother boarded the ship with Theseus and escaped with him. The father chased them with his war ship, which was much larger than the greek boat and was gaining on them. To slow them down Ariadne murdered her brother and cut up his body, dropping each piece into the water. Her father slowed down his ship so that he could collect each piece of his son and the greeks escaped.

Theseus was so horrified at what Ariadne had done that he abandoned her on the isle of Naxos, where she was found by the god of pleasure Dionysus, who married her.

This is only one version of the myth though! There are many others, so just pick your favourite :D I think it's a beautiful name.

i'm sorry i don't like the -dne bit of the name as i think it sounds harsh....i like Ariana tho.

but if YOU love it the you have to have it....

I really like Ariadne. Sounds lovely with Iris too. Nice and unusual without being . Fab name choice IMO.

It's one of those names which (to me) sounds like it's being said backwards though. I always think that about Phoebe too. Just ignore me

I love Ariadne (was a short listed name for DD) but we're Cypriot, so doesn't seem odd to us DD ended up being Lydia Athene.

btw, princess ariadne was daughter of king of crete and helped thessus escape from the minatour. sorry about no capitals!
