What do other mums associate with these names and are they good choices?? First child a girl called Maya Jasmine. I'm half Indian so don't want a traditional English name.. Help please as it is getting close and I am not sure!!

Oops, someone already said Thalia - sorry. It is lovely though. It was very high on my list for my DS who was born nearly ten years ago. So ahead of my time!

loobylu3 · 16/02/2009 22:36

We have a Maya (actually Maia) too and I am also half Indian with a non Caucasian, non British DH. We also have the same issue about wanting something a bit unusual/ not too English, etc as well as having v different taste!
We have a DS called Lucas which is v multicultural though it has become more popular recently (as has Maya too!)
Am expecting no.3 v shortly and still haven't decided completely!
I think Sienna/ Savannah/ Rio are no where near as lovely and classic as Maya and are too trendy/ celeby for my taste.
India is quite nice.
Other names that might suit you (some are on our shortlist):
Leela/ Layla/ Leila
Livia
Celeste
Sylvie
Elodie
Cassia
Elina/ Eliana
Ariadne
Marissa
Allegra

Cassius
Caspar
Hugo (multicultural)
Lucien/ Lucian
boys are hard!!

Rio - very downmarket - sorry.
Sienna pretty, but a bit predictable at the moment. What about Ramona, Camelia, Thalia, (pronounced Tah-lia) and Lola is nicer than Layla.

DD's name lovely - especially with the Indian influence, sounds exotic and classy.

jeanjeannie · 16/02/2009 21:49

Much prefer India and Nico

Not at all keen on Rio or Sienna - sounds too much like names in Heat magazine

Saskia is really lovely too

choosyfloosy · 16/02/2009 21:31

Nico is great.

Saskia I really like - also Sasha?

nigglewiggle · 16/02/2009 21:27

Thalia?

nightgardener · 16/02/2009 19:56

Nico or India..
I like both of those.

Nico is much better than Rio. Rio makes me think of a big black chef in New Orleans with a golden hoop earing in one ear, stirring a pot of gamba.

Layla is nice but quite similar to Maya.

India is lovely. One of the columnists with the Sunday Times is called India and I always loved that.

nkf · 16/02/2009 19:28

Burned sienna? Isn't there such a thing? Maybe I'm thinking of Cinammon.

nightgardener · 16/02/2009 19:28

And Nico? I think it goes well with Maya, but DH not sure about it...

nightgardener · 16/02/2009 19:26

Isn't that saffron??

OP posts:
nkf · 16/02/2009 19:25

I thought Sienna was a spice.

nightgardener · 16/02/2009 19:24

Like India...
Again on the long list, think we crossed it off for being a bit 'hippy'!? But I do still like it.

LoveMyLapTop · 16/02/2009 19:22

Dont like Rio or Sienna

Rindercella · 16/02/2009 19:20

SalmonintheLiffey · 16/02/2009 18:57

Siena is a place!

eyeeye · 16/02/2009 18:56

There are so many beautiful Indian names it's a shame not to choose one.

I don't like either of those names, they don't go with the beautiful name Maya Jasmine .. they sound rather icky actually

Rio is a river, a footballer and a Duran Duran Song

Sienna is a place

SalmonintheLiffey · 16/02/2009 18:56

Mrs Mattie, I agree, she so 'meh' she doesn't even annoy me as much as she should.

nightgardener · 16/02/2009 18:51

I said that to DH- I worked in a school and there was a girl called Rio.
Any more suggestions for boys names which aren't too tranditionally English and go with Maya??

OP posts:
mloo · 16/02/2009 18:49

There is a Rio in DS reception class.
This Rio is a GIRL, btw. I would go for a more obviously boy name, if I were you.
