Calypso or Calliope

I agree with Fennel.

Names like Jack, Tom, Grace or Ella are just so common that they don't identify a particular person anymore, whereas I'm much more likely to remember an Orlando or a Callista.

calypso also reminds me of ice cream sorry.

I love Calyspo and I'm tyring to convince dh to call our baby daugther just that.
He prefers Lilly, which I also like but it sounds like there are a lot of them about.
Boys names: Cosmo is by far my favorite.

I haven't discussed names with friends and family because a the end of the day it'll grow on them and so what if they wouldn't call their children that?. For every name some people will like it and some people won't.

I'm pleasantly surprised so many people like it and the people who don't pretty much just gave the "lollypop" answer. What about people called "Richard" shortened to "dick", nobody seems to find this funny. Some greek guys's names get shortened to "pan" and that's not funny either. "Megane" is a car name and popular in france.

Whatever name you choose there is no guarantee some marketing genius isn't going to call their next car that very name, or a brand of condoms (!) or that amy winehouse or pete doherty chooses that for their next baby. Later on in life you might come across someone you really hate with the same name as your child.

There's quite a few calypso on facebook, that doesn't mean anything really, just noticed it.

Calliope & Callista are pretty. Callista is quite sassy sounding and more 'usable' every day imo.

There is also rockstar (forgotten his name) who has a grown up daughter called Callie, short for Callico

Not keen on Calypso - there was a black boy in my year at school with this as a mn which was a cause for much hilarity amongst his friends.

I agree that Calypso is not a sympathetic character but nevertheless the book reminded me that Calypso as a name is (in my view but not everyone's) attractive.

Calypso is a 1980s Froot-Shoot type drink that came in a triangular carton.

Mary Wesley's Calypso was a shallow character who married for money, partied through the war and then abandoned her child Hamish (with her late husband's nanny).

Wouldn't endear me to the name Calypso! Love the name Polly though!

The reason I like names like these - apart from the fact I love the sounds of many Greek words - is that I have a boring name and it's tedious. Always having other people with my name around. I see names as a unique identifier for a child/person, and what's the point of giving them a name which others in their class/peer group/school are likely to have? So that you end up having to identify a child by its surname as well as its first name? To me that doesn't make a lot of sense.

I see it as quite useful that my dds don't have names shared by others in school or generally around the place. So that they work, as identifiers.

how funny, dh's girl choice was calliope and ds's actual name is on fimbo's boy's name. neither of them are particularly common.

I know a Calliope (pronounced Call-ee-oh-pee) known as Callie. People always blink when they hear it the first time but then get used to it. Her siblings are Alexander, Phoebe and Helena and yes, they do have Greek heritage! I definitely prefer Calliope to Calypso.

But Calypso is a fine name and was so long before the lolly was invented.

How about Irnbru for a boy - has a strong manly resonance, I feel.

I like Calypso (thanks to Mary Wesley), Calliope less so. I think Apollo is just a bit too wacky, but don't be deterred if it's your favourite name. How about Lysander?

Having spent yesterday in the library compensating for the school being closed I can confirm that Florence Nightingale's sister was indeed Parthenope.

We have an Apollo in the family which I actually really like, but then they live in a Spanish-speaking country so it's abbreviated to "Poli" which is quite sweet, but over here it automatically becomes Polly, which, when teamed with their ultra-British surname just sounds hilarious. I think you have to have a cool surname to pull it off.
Of the Callie names I prefer Calista, very original. Calliope reminds me too much of the melon cantaloupe, and calypso is an ice-lolly isn't it?
Anyway I can talk, my DS's name sounds very like a drink which I will not name but I don't care because I love it!

Calliope makes me think of callipers (and therefore Tiny Tim ). That is just me being ignorant though...am sure not many other people would make that association
