the meaning, god's gift, is lovely, but with you a trilby and her a fedora, she will be subject to a lifetime of teasing imvho.

Horton · 24/01/2009 17:24

Federica is lovely.

jenster1976 · 23/01/2009 20:29

Sorry this thread has really made me laugh out loud, I think it'll be a taste of things to come! What about Federica, if you like the fed thing?

Kwini · 23/01/2009 15:39

No need to apologise! Am interested to know what people think, even if at the end of the day we don't base our decision on MN

Silas is a lovely name, not sure it goes with Fedora though. Sorry.

beforesunrise · 23/01/2009 15:26

you'd be guaranteeing her a life in standup comedy and a permanent spot on the shrink's couch...

Horton · 23/01/2009 15:20

There must be a slightly less barking middle ground between Ann and Freya. Surely there must.

Tanee58 · 23/01/2009 15:20

As in Marner? Does your family have a taste for Victorian literature?

Kwini · 23/01/2009 15:14

That last was to wastingmyeducashun...

Would be ok if you werent called Trilby too.
People will think you are a mad hatter fetish type

Horton · 23/01/2009 15:07

Oh no, please don't. It's really really mad. Particularly if you are called Trilby.

Kwini · 23/01/2009 15:07

No, Silas

As far as I can tell, lots of popular names will get commented on - Scarlett will always be Scarlett O'Hara or Johansen; Allegra will always be the pill; Oscar will always be the Grouch, etc. - and as computer operating systems don't really register on our radar, we're not too bothered about that particular connotation!

Just wanted to know if others liked the sound of it in its own right - and am relieved to know that, judging by the responses here, there won't be five of them in kindergarten!

Would she thank us for it? Well, like I said, I love my name...and I reckon Fedora is stylish enough to work for a future actress or barrister (whatever she chooses to be). On the other hand, I doubt she'd thank us for choosing something terribly trendy - Ruby, Esme, Freya, etc. - or, horror of horrors, dull (I've not met a single Anne, Sarah or Jane who doesn't wish she'd been named something else)...

Actually, Trilby is a lovely name, but I don't like Fedora, sorry.

wastingmyeducation · 23/01/2009 15:01

What will you call your son? Bowler?

Katw3kitts · 23/01/2009 14:56

Oh no ......

There's already one Barack near me .... made it to the local news

stillenacht · 23/01/2009 14:55

Fedora - not meaning to sound rude but it sounds like a female contraception

Oovavu · 23/01/2009 14:53

ah I see, so you're just keen on hats as you have a vested interest as it were. Well, it's your baby and your choice, so if you like it, go for it! But it will be commented on (esp as you are both named after types of hats), so if you are at all sensitive about it, or easily bored of 'jokes' about it, then I'd avoid it really. Will your dd thank you for it when she's older?

Kwini · 23/01/2009 14:50

No, it's my first name. Our last name is very normal.

Oovavu · 23/01/2009 14:44

Do you mean your surname?

so potentially your dd would be Fedora Trilby?

I beg of you, no..........................

Kwini · 23/01/2009 14:42

Hee...as it happens, my name is Trilby and I love it! I do get a few people asking if it's after the hat, but the intelligent ones tend to have heard of the book as well

Fedora was my nickname at uni.

Isn't it a tennis player? No that's Federer.

ThingOne · 21/01/2009 16:32

Yep -it's a hat or an operating system. One to avoid IMO.

Petrovia · 21/01/2009 16:22

There are going to be a LOT of Baracks this year...

duchesse · 21/01/2009 16:15

or Panama?
