it was on our list for DD but we went off it after she was born. DH really liked it though. it did remind me of Zara Philips. Having said that, she is one of the better members of the royal family, does seem to do something, even if it is horseriding (i digress).
i liked it because it seemed to have a meaning in both hebrew and arabic / persian (depending on which baby names book you read) which i thought was kind of uniting (pregnancy brain clearly in gear, as if the problems of the world would be solved by my baby naming!!!)
when we've mentioned that it was a name we were considering the older generation have not liked it and said it was 'harsh'

eandz · 12/01/2009 00:02

i'm a zara. i get a lot of "oh like the store" comments when people ask me what my name is. it's annoying but not too horrible.

MarchNowFebMum · 11/01/2009 23:57

DH and I loved it (was only oone we agreed on!) but we were nervous about the shop connotations and chickened out. What about Zahra/Sarah/Sarin/Zarin?

Lonnie · 11/01/2009 11:49

I dont know any and moved from Surrey 1 year ago and didnt know any there either so I think cargirl is actually a bit unlucky in knowint that many. I think it is ok but I wouldnt say pretty its a bit to harsh for me to be pretty I think it is the Z sound for me that puts me off.. But if I am introduced to a Zara I dont think YUCK either..

BonsoirAnna · 11/01/2009 09:59

No.

firstontheway · 11/01/2009 09:55

Lovely

lunamoon2 · 10/01/2009 23:30

It's lovely.
love the shop too!

piscesmoon · 09/01/2009 16:13

No-Sarah is much prettier.

27 · 09/01/2009 16:10

I like it, it was one of the potential names I thought of when I was pregnant.

WowOoo · 09/01/2009 16:09

Lovely. Yes.

BlueChampagne · 09/01/2009 16:07

I went to school with one who was a bit horsey/jolly hockey sticks, but I still like the name. What about Sara, which is a bit softer?

loobylu3 · 08/01/2009 09:40

Not a favourite of mine tbh

vess · 08/01/2009 05:46

I did consider it for DD but in the end decided I couldn't name her after a clothes shop.
DH thought it was a sexy name.

nooka · 08/01/2009 03:54

Bit too horsey for me.

love it.

CityChickMarried2BushBaby · 07/01/2009 21:03

We had 2 friends use Zara within a couple of months of each other. Great name - pretty and punchy at the same time.

SAEJ · 07/01/2009 20:43

Zara, very nice. I know one born in July - seems to be on the up.

cece · 07/01/2009 20:20

I am going to ask around now to see if there are any!

Oh and sorry to hijack your thread! Zara is nice - go for it!

CarGirl · 07/01/2009 20:06

No my Zara often goes to collect friends dcs from TG and NHJ I will ask her if she knows any Zara's there, am curious now.

I can't even remember what I wanted to call her!

cece · 07/01/2009 20:04

Ah you see I didn't know any of the girls really as DS doesn't talk to/of them! At least he didn't when he was at TG. He never got invited to any of the girl's partys.

Now he is in Reception he has just been invited to his second girl's party but I had never heard of this girl till the invite arrived.

Is your friend's DD the same age?! I can't believe I missed a Zara for a whole year! There weren't many girls there last year.

CarGirl · 07/01/2009 19:59

cece my friend used to take her to TG quite regularly so you've probably at least seen one - lol

cece · 07/01/2009 19:56

Cargirl - that is funny as I don't know any Zaras! and I only live down the road... Personally I prefer Sara to Zara. (sorry)

rachels103 · 07/01/2009 19:56

First thought was the clothes shop, sorry. Quite like it as a name though.

Smilewearingthin · 07/01/2009 19:55

I know a Zara and her mother isn't totally sure it's the name they should have gone for ... Clothes shop connotations, popularity etc. In the end, though, you should choose the name you like and which feels right. Try it out for a bit, before and after birth. Sometimes a logical argument doesn't work and you just have to go with instinct when the baby is there.
