Florence - can't get the Magic Roundabout out of my head
Jemima - Quite nice, lot of scope for shortening
Violet - possibly the next Lily
Dahlia - doesn't appeal, have never known whether to pronounce it Daylia or Darlia
Miriam - like this one very much
Eliza - no thoughts either way tbh
Iris - don't like it much
Polly - love it
Constance - don't like much, sounds very formal
Edith - Don't like the sound
Helena - may have to spend her life correcting pronunciation, whichever way you decide to say it

bessmum · 31/12/2008 19:33

Florence and Eliza are the best I think, both lovely

audley · 31/12/2008 19:18

Fabulous list!
Florence - love but getting popular?
Jemima - love but offensive in USA so puts me off
Violet - love, agree with pp that is is better as a mn
Dahlia - adore this, my favourite
Miriam - don't like, personal association so not really relevant to you
Eliza - love as nn for Elizabeth
Iris - was on my shortlist but had DS
Polly - only other one I really don't like
Constance - beautiful
Edith - fab
Helena - lovely

SmilePlease · 31/12/2008 19:06

Dahlia - pretty but there's a shop called this and it is gaining popularity so it could be the next TopShop really.
Constance - Reminds me of constipation so no.
Edith - Sounds awful for a new born.

I would say call her Florence or Helena, they can both be shortened and roll off the tongue.

I think Polly is a bit faddy (DD's class is full of Pollys and Mollys). It's a shame, as I rather like it.

Florence is nice, as is Helena. Jemima reminds me of Jemima Khan, which is neither good nor bad in my book - just a fact. I don't like Dahlia!

singyswife · 31/12/2008 19:04

Sorry, hope I havent upset anyone

singyswife · 31/12/2008 19:03

I'm sorry but they all sound too fuddy duddy and old fashioned for me. If I had to pick one it would be Polly and possibly Iris.

I pretty much like all of those
Florence was on my list for dd2 but dh said it reminded him of florrie from the fimbles.

Littlefish · 31/12/2008 18:45

Florence
Jemima
Eliza
Polly
Constance
Helena

How many syllables in your surname? What are your feelings on the shortened version of any of these names?

Flossie
Jemma
Lizzie
Connie

If you want a name that doesn't shorten easily, then Polly or Helena are the ones.

ScummyMummy · 31/12/2008 18:44

Florence- thumbs up
Jemima- neutral shading to no not really
Violet- neutral
Dahlia- no
Miriam- ok but makes me think of Stoppard
Eliza- really like
Iris- ok
Polly- ok
Constance- too formal for me
Edith- sounds ugly
Helena- not keen

dinkymum · 31/12/2008 18:44

I love Jemima and violet. Jemima mostly. my fave girl name at the moment

FriendNeedsHelp · 31/12/2008 18:42

Dahlia makes me think of Jeeves & Wooster - Bertie's aunt.

FriendNeedsHelp · 31/12/2008 18:42

Florence, Jemima and Polly are my favourites.

In fact, dd1 has one of those names, and if I ever had a third dd, I'd use one of the others .

baublekins · 31/12/2008 18:41

I like Meredith actually, but can I ask why people aren't liking Dahlia?

Florence, Violet, Dahlia, Miriam, Iris, Constance & Helena - all are nice.

Eliza ? So many people choose names beginning El at the moment ? I would pick something else.

Jemima & Polly ? Too cute, nice for babies or dolls but for a women I don?t think there great.

Edith ? It?s not very elegant imo.

Personally I like Violet and Iris. The right combination of grown up and feminine.

janeite · 31/12/2008 18:40

Ooh yes: Meredith is beautiful!

morethanyoubargainfor · 31/12/2008 18:37

I totally agree with janeite, apart from i don't like helena or edith, but i do like meredith.

Florence, constance and violet are my favs.
