Ellynor?

We are contemplating the name Ellynor - spelt as it sounds, for our next dc, we want to be unusual and know that Eleanor is the usual spelling but are quite keen of going slightly off centre.

Honest thoughts please - but do be gentle

Because Elinor doesn't look pretty and I think that Ellynor does{stamps foot}

I think that I am going to have to agree to disagree with you all

When you meet Ellynor you have to be lovely to her - it won't be her fault that her mum and dad chose the spellings

Why choose a name and insist on a peculiar spelling? It just looks as if you can't spell!

Those are all accepted spellings, Ellynor is something you just made up, looks like you can't spell (sorry)

you are right, I shouldn't have asked for opinions, but you have all made me realise that it doesn't matter whtat you all say, we will be calling her Ellynor if she is a girl

You lot had better hope we have a boy (although I don't dare tell you what that name will be )

So you want it to be pronounced Elly Nor? Hmm, sounds weird to me but I'm very traditional when it comes to names. Think it's cos I'm a teacher and have come across many kids with unusual names/unusual spellings and they often hate them.

But, you go with what you want!

I never asked about my DC's name on here cos I knew I'd be told it was really boring!

Elinor (as in Sense & Sensibility) which I think is English variant, Eleanor which is the traditional or even Elenore but please, please not Ellynor!

Because we like the name Ellynor, we actually prefer it to Eleanor.

Why is it ok to spell Isabel/Isobel/Isabelle/Isabelle? but not Ellynor

the thing is, to me Ellynor wouldn't be pronounced Eleanor.

it would be ellie nor.

it isn't phonetic at all. IMO.

that said, I am very strongly of the opinion that you should name your baby a name that you love, and it shouldn';t matter what other people think.

THank god we didn't get away with it eh? The poor girl would have forever been explaining that her name wasn't Elleyna!

Sometimes names spelt as they soound are great and my dh and I are of the opinion that this is one of those times, I feel quite embaressed about it now reading allyour posts

So what about some suggestions for alternatives then? this baby is going to arrieve soon and I need some names to give it

(sti8ll don't know if it is a ds or a dd)

I have a very boring name, Clare, but everyone spells it Claire and it drives me insane!

So how all these poor kids are going to cope with their 'modern' spellings god only knows - especially as, with the advent of email, spelling your name properly is even more important. I lost plenty of work emails cos people were sending them to Claire instead of Clare.

Eleanor is a beautiful name btw.

Elinor or Eleanor are both lovely.

Please don't do Ellynor, it just looks a bit silly and unfortunately lends itself to 'witty' schoolyard variations like Smellynor.
