Still struggling with girls names for baby due in weeks. Any thoughts on these?
I know Dora is a little spoilt by 'the explorer' but I really like it as a name!

I really like Dora (and I don't think it has been spoilt by 'the explorer' a)because it is a classic name which will outlast the programme and b)I think Dora the explorer is fantastic( she is feisty and clever and adventurous and has a monkey as a best friend - how cool is that!

Dorelia is a pretty name that's a bit like Dora with a bit of Pearl mixed in.

ILoveBrucie · 30/12/2008 20:28

What about Doris instead?

or Diego

loobylu3 · 30/12/2008 20:27

Celestine is really pretty and I am v tempted. It's just a little different in style from the names of my other children which are more simple iyswim.

Love Celestine

NorthernLurker · 30/12/2008 19:28

Dorcas?

Dorothea?

Ada?

piscesmoon · 30/12/2008 19:26

I think Cecily and Sylvie are quite pretty. I can't stand Dora or Pearl.

janeite · 30/12/2008 19:15

Cecily is lovely and Celeste and Sylvie are pretty. Of the original two I really don't like Dora and think Pearl is quite sweet, although I like Isadora better. I don't like Elodie. So Cecily gets my vote!

loobylu3 · 30/12/2008 19:12

Thanks a lot- mixed views but v helpful. My other possibilities are Celeste (or maybe Celestine), Cecily, Elodie, Sylvie.
Perhaps I should stick with theses and plug some really dodgy names with DH!

Not Pearl, please.

Nancy66 · 30/12/2008 15:04

I like Dora - think it's very sweet for a little kid but works as a grown up name too.

Don't really like Pearl - it was the pre war 'tracy' according to my mum!

delightedoldbag34 · 30/12/2008 11:16

Yes, good plan - announce that it's a choice between Edna and Gertrude and see if that gets him thinking of more sensible options.

Although what about Dolly (if you like Dora?) - that's quite pretty and also unusual?

SmileyMylee · 29/12/2008 22:13

I think Dora is a beautiful name

loobylu3 · 29/12/2008 22:06

Thanks for the idea pretty butterfly. Definitely worth a try!!

rusmum · 29/12/2008 21:53

Pearl!! i also LOVE Olive

prettybutterfly · 29/12/2008 21:51

Reverse psychology? ... start suggesting names like Ermintrude and Mountain-River-Dew-Fairy.

loobylu3 · 29/12/2008 21:23

I have a lot of other options but unfortunately DH hasn't agreed to a single one and hardly suggests anything so am getting desperate. I like Flora but DH has rejected this also! Am going to have to work on this!!

prettybutterfly · 29/12/2008 21:23

Dorathea?

AuntieMaggie · 29/12/2008 20:46

Pearl sounds a bit old fashioned to me (sorry!) but I like Dora.

delightedoldbag34 · 29/12/2008 20:44

I like Isadora. I do also like Dora (its one of my DD's middle names named after a grandmother), but not sure i'd have used it as first name. Pearl just makes me think of Pearl Lowe (uck) - not very keen on it sorry
Do you have any other options?

or what about Ruby or Topaz instead of Pearl? I know a really cute little girl called Topaz (Topy for short). Or Emerald (then you could call her Emmy?)

or what about Flora (if you like Dora). Flora is fab name, mine is very cute but tough too! I think it's unusual without being too wacky. Which I guess is what you're after?

missymoo2411 · 29/12/2008 20:27

dont like either what about when she is 14 0r 15 yrs old i think there r far more pretty names from times past than either of them but thats me u have to choose what suits you and yr family i just know a kid who is 10 yrs old called betty and she gets pict on so she calls her self beth.

prettybutterfly · 29/12/2008 19:59

Isadora?
Theodora?

Thora, Nora, Cora.

Pearl a bit yuck (to me).

Prefer Dora but would have it as nn.

The explorer will be long forgotten soon enogh. I never let things like that bother me.

MrsMattie · 29/12/2008 19:30

Dora isn't very nice and is way too associated with 'The Explorer' for anyone with kids.

Pearl is pretty.

rubyslippers · 29/12/2008 19:27

Pearl

loobylu3 · 29/12/2008 19:27

Thanks a lot for suggestions. I'm not keen on Theodora though and put off Isadora/ Pandora by the association although they are both nice names.
