Pearl or Dora

Still struggling with girls names for baby due in weeks. Any thoughts on these?
I know Dora is a little spoilt by 'the explorer' but I really like it as a name!

i dont like either

but love Elodie !

piscesmoon · 03/02/2009 19:18

I agree old ladies.I would say that you were spot on with 'pre war Tracy'. Funny to think that in 50 yrs time people will probably be giving Tracy another burst of popularity!

amandine07 · 03/02/2009 19:01

Sorry but these names just make me think of women aged 70+ !!

lunavix · 25/01/2009 21:31

Have to admit I don't like either. Dora is ruined and Pearl is far too old.

WinkyWinkola · 25/01/2009 21:29

Pearl. It's beautiful.

Gunnerbean · 25/01/2009 21:27

I agree about Pearl being the pre war 'Tracy'. My nan used to have a couple of friends at bingo called Pearl.

Names are sooo personal but personally, I don't think pearl is due a revival.

BabyBaby123 · 25/01/2009 21:25

neither of them imo.....

nkf · 25/01/2009 21:10

Dora is pretty.
Not sure about Pearl. It has a certain style about it but it's a bit blunt to my ears. I don't really like one syllable names apart from nicknames.

loobylu3 · 25/01/2009 21:07

Thx Kateus. Will let you know the name when baby born (undecided still)- only 3 or 4 weeks to go now!!

I love Dorothea and Theodora which can obviously both be shortened to Dora. Also love Pearl, but would be bit worried about the 'pearl necklace' connotations (ie the porn film type, not the actual gems!) You are asking for trouble when she's a teenger!

BumblBeee · 22/01/2009 23:14

I like Pearl

Isadora ok

Dora just looks and sounds dowdy to me.

Know about 12 Ruby babies

kateus · 22/01/2009 22:19

Let us know what you go for won't you? xxx

vess · 22/01/2009 04:54

Theodora or Dorothea and then shorten to Dora if the explorer connection bothers you. If not, then just Dora is nice too.
Pearl is ok for a middle name, I guess, but not as a first name imo.

loobylu3 · 21/01/2009 22:14

Just noticed this thread has been slightly re-activated!
Still like both the names. May perhaps use Pearl as a middle name.
Will probably see what suits her when she is born!!

Pearl wins hands down for me

Nantucket · 21/01/2009 15:52

I love Isadora, with Dora as a nickname.

kateus · 21/01/2009 15:48

My baby is called Dora (I wasn't aware of the cartoon character so I've had to do a lot of patient nodding and smiling at people saying 'ooh, like Dora the Explorer?') it's a lovely name and I couldn't get it out of my head all through my pregnancy.
I also really like Sylvie from your list, it was a runner-up for my girl as well, but Dora won the day!

tummytickler · 15/01/2009 10:51

Hi
my dd is nearly 4 and called Pearl so i clearly love it!
How about Dorothy, our ds was going to be Dorothy shortened to Dottie (but he was a boy!). You could use nn of Dora, but she could chande it when she is older if she wanted to. Personally I would be reluctant to give an obviously nicknamey name as a given name - although it is lovely!

sleepyhead3 · 31/12/2008 18:25

Dora is a lovely name but spoiled by the explorer. Go for Pearl!

loobylu3 · 31/12/2008 10:27

It is interesting how mixed the OPs are. Most seem to like one name and hate the other!

looove pearl.

i think i would be put off dora by all the inevitable explorer comments.

nula · 30/12/2008 22:33

I know a little girl called Pearl. Everyone I know thinks it is a really cool name.

hester · 30/12/2008 22:10

Dora was my first choice for dd.

everybody I know told me that was a bad idea .

So I think it probably is.... shame, though.

ILoveBrucie · 30/12/2008 22:05

We love Dora and Diego in this house, enjoy your girl, Dora is a lovely name

loobylu3 · 30/12/2008 21:58

I don't know who Pearl Lowe is I'm afraid!
IloveBrucie- thanks but prob not Diego for a baby girl- haha!
