Have just read 40,0001 baby names - help me choose from the final list xxx

Boobz · 27/12/2008 20:58

I have just spent the last 2 hours avoiding tidying up after the Christmas relatives' departure by reading "40,001 Best Baby Names" from cover to cover and compiling my short list for the babe due in March.

Have already cut it down with DH's input, so now need to get down to final two. Do you like any of the combos we have already or can you see a better one from the names on the list?

Thanks xxx Boobz xxx

Ooh people like Marianne, don't forget it has the Jane Austen pedigree.

prettybutterfly · 29/12/2008 19:52

Marianne and Hester my faves from the girls' list. Hazel and Nina very good as first names too. What's your name Boobz? (Other than Boobz of course.) Us that in the middle.

prettybutterfly · 29/12/2008 19:49

Boys:

Christopher (Kester) Benjamin

Tristan good, but not sure what with. Not Benjamin. Blake, maybe.

Podrick · 29/12/2008 12:24

Christopher or Marianne

Kristingle · 29/12/2008 12:18

and do you like unisex names, like Jocelyn or Elliot?

and not Bishop, unless its a family name of course

Bishop Reed is a job not a name

Kristingle · 29/12/2008 12:17

i think you shoudl go for a less popular but not too way out first name, as your surname isn't unusual

so not Lucy, harry, Daniel, Isaac, Ellie, Ella, Isobel,

nothing that starts with R

if you choose a longer name you must be happy with all the usual abbreviations. there is no point in thinking that you can force everyone to call your DD Josephine - they wont they will call her Jo. So do you like Bea, El, Gaby, Penny, Danny, Gabe, Nat and Zac???

You need a polysyllabic first name - so not Leo or tess. personally i think the three syllable names sounds better then the two, but the two are OK. so claudia reed has more impact that Nina Reed

i like most of your names except castor ( sugar) and blake

Zahrah · 29/12/2008 12:13

I always look into the meaning of the names as well. This is a fab link;

www.name-meanings.com/

so my choice above =

Hero Of God - He Will Laugh

Light Hearted - Wisdom

Zahrah · 29/12/2008 12:05

Gabriel Isaac

Jocelyn Sophia

Boobz · 29/12/2008 11:44

This is brilliant - lots of good combos coming through...

Like Sasha Beatrix Reed...

(Agree, Rudy Reed sounds a bit like a porn star...)

I love nathan daniel i think that sounds lovely. For a girl i think i like your choices of middle names. Sophia, elean and isobel are all really nice and will stand the test of time IMO.

BucketsofReindeerPoo · 28/12/2008 19:21

Hector Blake (so cool!) and Marianne Elena. I wanted Marianne (with nn Maggie) if my last had been a girl. Elena has nice rhythm and alliteration with Marianne.

Mrs Woolf - I have indeed seen a lot of names which repeat themselves which made the task of getting through 40,000 of them slightly easier. My DH's favourite one from the book is "Moon Unit". Yep, that's in there.

Can'tSleep -- am happy to use a combo of names from any of the names really, so could use 2 of the first names instead of one from the middle name list (the only reason a particular name is on the middle name list is I don't know if I like it enough to be a first name, IFSWIM).

I'm less inspired by your girls' combos. I like Hester, Natasha and Penelope as first names, but am struggling to put them with any of the middle names, from which I like Hazel best.

Maybe Penelope Hazel?

I think that you should avoid having both names ending with the same sound, like you do in your first and third combinations.
