boys names - classic and wont date

munteria · 22/12/2008 13:40

hello

expecting DC in February and really stuck for boys names (girls names seem easier for some reason)

I want something quite classic but which is not that popular so wont date.

I did like Felix at one stage but there are loads around and is very 'of the moment' so may date a bit.

I know that the classic boys names are very 'now' but dont want one that is 'fashionable'. I'm probably expecting too much!

Any ideas of other boys names that may fit the bill?

I would second Oliver. Traditional name and although supposedly popular my ds was the only one at his nursery and now is the only one in his year at school. He only answers to Ollie but I figure it is a name that can grow with him. He was nearly George.

Reuben is lovely.

CuppaTeaJanice · 24/12/2008 18:01

You can't go wrong with John!

OutNumbird · 24/12/2008 17:57

Is Felix popular? I know only one (and I know tonnes of boys under 10).

Simon, Mark.

Laurence - it has been stable at about 12 per thousand for over 100 years, it is recognisable and not too unusual, there will only ever be one or two in a school and all famous Laurences are nice people and not militant dictators. No one has ever shortened it except the boy himslf who sometimes calls himslf "Loz" which is quite sweet.

Richard, Saul, Patrick, Gregory, Marcus, Victor, Donald, Peter

None of those are too popular and aren't fashionable or unfashionable imo

I have a Samuel Peter Paul - all family names, but also classics that won't date (we have Samules going back 8 generations). If I ever have another DS he might be Frederick Anthony Ambrose.

munteria · 23/12/2008 16:57

Alexander and Laurance are good ones (i.e. dont know any amongst my group of frends) will add them onto the (very short) list!

I agree about it being hard to pick a boys name.

Love Edward and think Teddy as a nickname is ACE

themoon66 · 23/12/2008 11:31

I've got a Lawrence. His friends shorten it to Lol.

LaDiDaDi · 23/12/2008 11:26

I think that Edward is about to shoot up the popularity charts. Now I love it so that wouldn't put me off but it might put you off if you don't want something to date.

Michael
David
Adam
Robert
Stephen
Peter
Philip

are classic but not popular imo.

My favourites are

Edward
Gregory
Arthur
Archie
Will
Hugh

George
Edward
Thomas
Quentin
James
Peter
Charles

I don't mind Felix but don't feel it has the same 'classic, timeless' appeal as other names.

lea1980 · 22/12/2008 21:16

my ds is called seth
obviously we get the emmerdale jokes, but by the time hes at school (hes only 15 mths) not many people will remember ( i hope)
we picked that because alot of dhs friends have classic names..andrew, james, matthew etc and we wanted something different but not wacky!!

annasmami · 22/12/2008 18:14

In my opinion, classic boys names that are not too common include

Edward
Monty
Quentin
James
William

Agree that girls's names are easier...
