What do you all think of Elouise for a girl?

OP posts:

Well I like it. But then I don't like the 'ordinary' names and think a little individuality is a v important thing.

So there

pregapuss · 08/12/2008 20:54

That might be because Eloise is a French name and you are not French, and neither are your friends, family members, or neighbors.

Rather than bastardise a perfectly good name, why didn't you just choose a name your friends/family could pronounce?

Bit harsh no? To say to somebody who has already chosen that and has to stick with it for life?

it's a pretty name.

ben5 · 08/12/2008 20:15

love it but there seem to be alot of them around at the moment

janeite · 08/12/2008 20:15

No need to be French to use it though: just to like The Damned!

aidansyummymummy · 08/12/2008 20:14

As someone who is constantly having to spell my name I tried to ensure my name choice for my child was something that they wouldnt need to spell. Howver I still get it spelt wrong...arrggghh

Have to agree I much prefer Eloise.

hippipotami · 08/12/2008 20:13

Agree with cote. But also have to say that one of my friends called her dd Eloise, and absolutely everyone knew how to pronounce it. I have never seen it as a 'difficult' name.

Elouise is not nice imo. Because it looks like it should be pronounced EeLuese.

Eloise is however beautiful

CoteDAzur · 08/12/2008 20:08

"We spelt it Elouise because when we wrote out a list of possible names, nobody seemed to even know how to prounce Eloise"

NowICanSpellGeansaiNollaig · 08/12/2008 20:01

just to be the millionth person to say Eloise is nice. Elouise is a confusing jumble.

janeite · 08/12/2008 20:01

Eloise is a lovely name. I wanted it for dd1 but dp wouldn't agree. Please don't spoil it by spelling it differently; it just looks silly.

ketal · 08/12/2008 19:58

Agree with the others - Eloise is a gorgeous name (a bit biased because I have one). Personally wouldn't go with Elouise because it does look a bit naff, but also it changes the pronunciation from EL - O - EESE to E - LU - EESE. Eloise is a traditional name (albeit relatively uncommon), whereas Elouise just seems too modern and try hard for me.

why take a name and spell it incorrectly? Just makes you look illiterate.

RachieB · 08/12/2008 12:47

Love it when Eloise

agree that Elouise just looks wrong!

Turniphead1 · 07/12/2008 22:40

Hmmm. Or even Eloise.

Turniphead1 · 07/12/2008 22:39

Eliose. Beautiful name. Why change the spelling? Looks a little naff...

cece · 07/12/2008 22:26

I just came to see how you pronounced Elouise. I thought it must be Louise but with an e sound in front of it. Like Email!

Sorry but if you want to call her Eloise then spell it right or you will get lots of people saying it incorrectly. But if you are happy to correct then...

elsiepiddock · 07/12/2008 22:25

Eloise - please don't wreck the spelling of a pretty name. Elouise makes it chavy imo.

chloemegjess · 07/12/2008 22:21

Ok, my DD's name is Elouise and I don't think she is a "poor child"

We spelt it Elouise because when we wrote out a list of possible names, nobody seemed to even know how to prounce Eloise and they kept saying Ellise and similar. yet when we wrote Elouise they knew what it was as it is written as it sounds.

I think it is a lovely name personally

IllegallyBrunette · 07/12/2008 22:12

I agree the spelling should be Eloise.

It is dd2's middle name and I love it and still wish i'd had it as her first name.

piscesmoon · 07/12/2008 22:10

Eloise is lovely-why would you want to spell it differently? Your poor DD would have a lifetime of spelling it for people and explaining that her parents could spell, they just wanted to be different!

DontCallMeSantaBaby · 07/12/2008 22:02

It looks peculiar, and like preggers I think it looks like E-louise to me, maybe a virtual Louise. Poor child will spend her life grumbling because people spell it 'wrong' - a name that people think they can spell is worse than one no one can spell (IMO, as someone who spent 27 years with a surname that was NOT the same as someone very famous, but sounded like it was).

BoccaDellaNativita · 07/12/2008 22:01

Of course it's your choice, but the name Eloise seems to be catching on now, so most people will have heard it and will think they know how to spell it. If you use the Elouise spelling, you'll constantly be having to say 'no, with a U between the O and the I'.

OhLITTLEFISHofBethlehem · 07/12/2008 21:59

Eloise is a lovely name. Why do you want to spell it differently? I get really unnecessarily annoyed when people take a lovely name and try and be different by changing the spelling!

Sorry - It's just a bugbear of mine.

preggersplayspop · 07/12/2008 21:54

Looks a bit odd spelt Elouise I think. Makes me think of email for some strange reason. I really like Eloise though. Or Louise is fine without the e.

Jas · 07/12/2008 21:51

Why?
It just looks wrong.....
