Baby names

Find baby name inspiration and advice on the Mumsnet Baby Names forum.

I give-up, after 9 months and hundreds of these threads, we settled on a name only for a close friend to call her baby the same thing.

She announced it yesterday.
The name was Nina.
My DD2 is due in 2 days. We have no names, it took ages to settle on Nina, and now I am so bored with name hunting.

Someone just tell me what to name her. Pretty please?

It should be classic but not boring and I tend to like short names.

Nona is from the Latin word "nonus" meaning ninth

so if DD is born on the 9th it'll be perfect

noonar · 30/11/2008 15:27

yup, kitty is sweet. dd2 has one in her class. great till you meet her on the playground and say 'hello kitty'

noonar · 30/11/2008 15:26

i second ELIZA! tis dd2's middle name, but i wish we'd had it as a first name.

my next girl will be ELSIE , if i have one

norkmaiden · 30/11/2008 15:19

Eliza is lovely!

TheNewsMongersGeansaiNollag · 30/11/2008 15:17

Nona is Catalan for Grandma I think.

PuppyMonkey · 30/11/2008 12:54

Nina is a very boring name anyway imho. Choose something completely different from your mate - it will be v. daft if she has a Nina and you have a Nona...

My faves girls names are Esme, Madeleine and Eliza. Also met a Kitty the other day which seemed v.cute.

soundbites · 30/11/2008 12:43

Call her the name you love! I have friends with a Charlie each who were born within three weeks of each other and it isn't a problem. Nina is a lovely name. Go for it!

Spidermama · 30/11/2008 08:45

This is the problem with boring classic names. I have a classic name and I share it with several friends. Pisses me off it does.

stroppyknickers · 30/11/2008 08:41

Eva? Ava? Hannah?

MrsJamin · 30/11/2008 08:21

but i'd be gutted if a friend called their baby DS's name, it would be so weird.

ScottishMummy · 29/11/2008 23:44

these alleged theft of names really are daft.do you like it?use it then.end of

did you expect to go through life never meeting another nina

How about Nona?

About as close to Nina as you can get

and just as nice

jabberwocky · 29/11/2008 23:12

Nadia

sundew · 29/11/2008 23:09

Hi - how about a name that you could shorten to Nina (maybe Elanor?)

thumbwitch · 29/11/2008 22:58

geek update - see Wikipedia on 101 Dalmations original - my memory ain't what it used to be - Darlings = Dearlys and Lady = Missis (so close!)

CoffeeCrazedMama · 29/11/2008 22:32

Don't let it stop you. I didn't call my ds a name I had been going to call dd1 if she were a boy, because two of my friends had dss of that name.

You know what, now he is 12 and I haven't seen either of them for years, so it wouldn't have mattered in the long run if I had stuck to that original name. Lives and friendships change, social groups move on. If it is the name you love, just go for it. In ten or so years you probably won't even remember the other Nina.

Disclaimer: the name we ended up giving ds suits him down to the ground and I can't imagine him being anything else!

thumbwitch · 29/11/2008 22:05

no no, uptomyeyes, that is the Disney version - in the original Dodie Smith version, Perdita was called that because she was found by the Darlings, lost and sad because her own puppies had also gone missing. She was covered in mud and when they washed her off, she was a liver-spotted Dalmation. I think her litter was only about 7 pups but they were also found with the rest.
Pongo's missus was originally called Lady (I think), and they only had 15 pups.

uptomyeyes · 29/11/2008 20:29

Artichokes - can I just make sure that Perdita from about 15 posts ago is absolutely scotched - I'm sure that Perdita was the bitch that gave birth to 101 dalmations....

How about Isla?

camgirl · 29/11/2008 16:30

Stick with Nina if you love it. They can always be differentiated by surname Nina X and Nina Y.
