Just found out we're having a girl!! Very excited, but also shocked as would have bet my right eye it was a boy. Pah so much for mothering instinct

Ruby is the one and only girls name we have agreed on like at the moment. My only real worry is that is much too popular currently. Opionions please!

Rubi is even worse! My pet hate is people who have alternative spellings.

BexieID · 26/10/2008 07:47

I know one, spelt Rubi. It is a nice name.

Eunicewonderstuff · 26/10/2008 07:34

It sounds nice but it's chav central here and tagged with -May or -Grace.

It might be unusual where you are though.

BBBeeast · 26/10/2008 07:31

i don;t care if it is popular i think it is lovely.

i worked in a care home and there was a ruby there who was really wonderful and positive and happy. this probably effects my feelings!

mickeylou · 26/10/2008 07:29

love the name but very popular here
(cumbria). could never have it as close friend has a ruby.

wickedwitchofthesoutheast · 25/10/2008 22:37

I used to LOVE the name - until a horrible girl I knew named her daughter ruby and it ruined it for me lol
but the name is so, so cute - a little gem is what I always used to think of when I heard the name

lunamoon2 · 25/10/2008 21:55

Not really-only suits dark haired girls somehow

It's ok. Lots of babies been born in last 3 years or so with the name round here. I think of the kaiser chiefs song whenever I hear it!

IllegallyBrunette · 25/10/2008 11:03

I think it is a lovely name, and it wouldn't bother me at all if it were popular tbh.

I have a very common name and there were always loads of girls with the same name at school, but it was never an issue at all.

findtheriver · 25/10/2008 10:57

I like it, but don't love it - I think there are prettier names around.

The popularity would put me off though. My friend who teaches in a primary school tells me that every class from about age 8 downwards has at least one Ruby.

MadBadandWieldingAnAxe · 24/10/2008 22:53

There are lots around here (not surprising as it's no 1 or 2 in the baby name charts).

It's a lovely name but it's highly unlikely she'll be the only one in her class. So what, you may think!

Hulababy · 24/10/2008 22:51

I like the name Ruby I think. Only know of one child with this name.

ScottishMummy · 24/10/2008 19:53

Vpopular i know 4.all Kaiser chief likey parents

Plonker · 24/10/2008 19:45

Its ok. Lots and lots and lots of them round here, but if you like it, go for it!

AbbeyA · 24/10/2008 19:40

I just see an overweight, elderly woman in a nylon overall! I can't see why it is so popular-along with Pearl,Ivy,Violet, Elsie and other early 20th century names.

RachieB · 24/10/2008 19:33

i like it

It's lovely, but ridiculously popular.

So up to you.

My parents gave me a ridiculously popular name for the era, but it never bothered me. There were always other girls of the same name in my class, but as you get older and go into the big wide world, some how, it just doesn't seem to matter. Especially as Ruby is more of a classic name - not something brought into fashion (like Kylie was when she first shot to fame for e.g.)

MrsMattie · 24/10/2008 16:23

It's lovely, yes - very popular, though.

electra · 24/10/2008 16:22

I don't like it at all and don't see the appeal...sorry.

gauly · 24/10/2008 15:56

Ruby was the second most popular girls name last year in England and Wales. It is fairly likely there will be other Rubys in her class i'm afraid.

Bonnycat · 24/10/2008 15:54

It seems to be very popular but then i dont know any!
If you like it go for it,its only popular because it so lovely
