Boys names that work in FRENCH/ENGLISH??

Psychomumma · 15/10/2008 21:03

I'm English, my husband's French. So far we have 2 girls, and a boy called Sebastien John. Expecting son no.2 mid-Dec, and need to find a name that works in both languages... I love Theo (can't do accents on this pc) but FIL vetoed it . We both like Louis, but BIL (aged 41, 50% chance of never settling down to have kids gggrrrrr) has reserved it. Also love Joshua, but have nephew calld that . I think it needs to have at least two syllables to go with big bro's name. Any ideas?? I like more unusual names, but DH is q conservative . Help please!

Ours all have to work in French too, I have a William Gilbert and would love an Artur if this bump is a boy but can't with our surname, I think it is so cute in French

bikerunski · 16/10/2008 22:18

So how exactly can someone "reserve" a name, especially if they have a 50% chance of not having children?

dd's best friend was a little boy named Corentin, pronounced with a hard K sound.

Sebastien and

Quentin

or

Tristan

I know a Jocelin, he's called Jos

TexasChainKLAWmassacre · 16/10/2008 12:36

ask BIL how he will feel if he never has kids or at least a boy?

Wouldn't he love to have a special nephew Louis in that case?.....

Oh - I opened this prepared to suggest Louis. I love it. But as that has (rather unreasonably) been reserved:

How about Anton, Arnaud, Lawrence (a bit girly in French perhaps), Christian (a bit too 'rhymy' with Sebastian?), George / Georges, Marcus, Xavier, Eliot, Julian / Julien.

Sorry, just seen your message about your BIL. But TBH, no-one can reserve a name.

I think Theo is lovely too, and would go beautifully with Sebastien. Why does your FIL have a problem with it? And if it isn't a serious problem, I'd just say 'Well, we love it so we've decided to use it'. Once the baby is born he'll get over it I'm sure.
And what if BIL never has a child? Or the mother of his child doesn't like the name Louis? Or he only has girls? Again, I think you should discuss this with him if you do really like it.

mumoverseas · 16/10/2008 09:01

I'm sorry but what has it got to do with FIL? If you and your DH like the name Theo (which I think is really nice) then go for it! And how can BIL 'reserve' a name? Again, if you and DH like it, then go for it.

I had a similar dilemma as we are both English but live in France. DS2 arrived on 26 August and is Samuel William Nicholas, which seems quite popular & easy to pronounce for the neighbours!! He was almost Luc too...
Other ideas in DS1's CP class are ;
Cody
Clarentin
Victor
Adrian
Erwann
Baptiste
Titouan
Dorian
Mael
Marin
Franck

and btw you can have loads of fun on this site

noms.voila.fr/v2/welcome/default_voila_v3.asp

Just go to the "prenom" box in the lower middle part of the page and type in any first name you fancy and it shows you a graph of popularity.

much time-wastiing available there
