Flora = margarine?

We already have an Isla and hoping that this bump is a little Gregor, but if it is another girl we are finding it hard to think of another name with Scottish leanings (to go with our surname). I like Flora and DH quite likes it but struggles to get away from the margarine connection. What do you think?

I love the name Flora and it was number 1 on my list if we had a girl, but then DH pointed out the 'spreads easily' thing I didn't think it would be something that kids now would say though.
It's a great name and I will still push for it if we have a girl !!

frazzledoldbag34 · 14/10/2008 08:58

I was also thinking that 'spreads easily' thing hasn't been used or heard for years. Doubt my Flora (2) will be taunted by it, unless by older people with no sense.

LemonyAle · 14/10/2008 00:11

I love Flora - great with Scottish surnames (I sport one too). I think the Flora "spreads easily" ad campaign was over 20 years ago (?) so wouldn't worry about today's kids making smutty puns

Lovely point fishie about the name meaning "every flower in the world".

easily spreadible....sorry

macherie · 13/10/2008 21:39

Our friends have a little girl called Flora, I think it's lovely and really suits her, but they did get a hard time from the dh's family about the marg connection. I don't think anyone really comments on it now, it's just her name IYKWIM.

There was one incident, when Flora was born, a mum at their ds's school asked her name, and said "well, that's a funny name for her". This womans daughter is called Bathsheba!!!

fishie · 13/10/2008 21:35

flora is a lovely name and ds would very likely have been it if a dd.

every flower in the world, what a thing. not tawdry margarine.

BloodshotEyeballsintheScarySky · 13/10/2008 21:34

Flora is lovely and much prettier than Florence. Never made the marg connection...but no, don't call her Flora Marjorie

umberella · 13/10/2008 21:33

I wanted Flora for DD but DP wouldn't let me have it as he worried that people would make 'easy spread' jokes when she was older.

I thought that was just his filthy mind though.

Imawurzel · 13/10/2008 21:31

I like Flora.
My middle name is Marjorie and i used to get called margarine tub, flora, and thers at school. meanies.
So don't call her Marjorie.

berolina · 13/10/2008 21:28

One advantage to not living in the UK is that I can have a Flora (should not-conceived-yet dc3 be a girl) without people making inane and misogynistic 'margarine' jokes.

findtheriver · 13/10/2008 21:22

I'm afraid the 'spreads easily' thing springs to mind.... when I was at school the local slapper was known as Flora

blueshoes · 13/10/2008 20:03

Flora London marathon ...

frazzledoldbag34 · 13/10/2008 19:37

We are a Lurpack household by the way (in moderation, of course).
Irrelevant fact for the night!

frazzledoldbag34 · 13/10/2008 19:36

kathy - quite! Who on earth buys the stuff anyway - it tastes and smells gross and as you say isn't actually even very good for you. Ban it, I say!
My Flora calls herself 'Rora' which is super-cute (IMO anyway).

Kathyis6incheshigh · 13/10/2008 17:40

I think it's a lovely name and no-one will be eating margarine in a few years once everyone realises it is worse for you than butter as well as being vile.

cremolafoam · 13/10/2008 17:37

Fleur
Finola

CoteDAzur · 13/10/2008 17:36

It makes me think of "vaginal flora".

I personally prefer Fleur as i cant get Margerine out of my head with Flora

Sorry

frazzledoldbag34 · 13/10/2008 15:56

I have a Flora (age 2)
We don't give the margerine thing a second thought and everyone she meets comments on her unusual and pretty name. It totally suits her. (Blonde hair big blue eyes, totally gorgeous). And TBH if anyone takes the piss out of her name when she's older they'll wish they hadn't (she's a feisty wee thing!) Oh yes, and Scottish too.

mabel1973 · 13/10/2008 14:17

I posted on here about the name flora a month or 2 ago, as I really like it, however the reactions from most was that it would be v cruel to impose on a girl, due to the 'spreads easily' jokes.
I thought maybe these days it wasn't associated with the margarine so much, but apparently I was wrong! needless to say it's put me right off!

francagoestohollywood · 13/10/2008 14:00

I love the name Flora. I don't makea connection to the margarine though, as I didn't grow up in the UK, we didn't have a flora margarine in italy

PuppyMonkey · 13/10/2008 13:54
