My sis was going to call her dd Phillipa - that's what she registered on the birth certificate. But her other kids kept calling the baby Flipper... so she changed to Emily.

Kitty - Very nice but I think I would prefer as a nn for Katharine.
Martha - Lovely
Verity - Like
Lyra - Don't like because it makes me think of tights.
Helena - Very nice
Molly - Like
Eliza - Very nice
Celeste - Too French although I am not averse to using foreign names, I prefer Cecily which has the same sort of sound to it.
Pippa - Quite like.
Rita - Too many Fifty somethings with this name.
Ellen - Don't like. Ellie and Ella are prettier.

Martha, Helena & Eliza are my favourites.

Spidermama · 19/09/2008 11:15

Great shortlist.

No to Pippa, Ellen and Verity.

Maybe to Kitty, Martha, Helena, Molly.

Big yes to Eliza, Celeste.

Biggest yes of all to Lyra.

Eliza, Helena, Martha, Ellen, would be my preferred order of choice.

goodasgold · 18/09/2008 23:09

mamazee · 18/09/2008 23:05

LynetteScavo · 18/09/2008 23:02

Kitty - not keen
Martha - lovely
Verity - lovely
Lyr - not too bad
Helena - OK
Molly - too many around here
Eliza - like it
Celeste - I really like it, would have had it for DD, except it sort of reminded me of incest. Sorry.
Pippa - not keen
Rita - OK, it was my g'mas name, but I wouldn't give it to my DD.
Ellen - OK

HRHMamazon · 18/09/2008 22:58

Kitty - ok
Martha - love it
Verity - bit like your trying too hard
Lyra - no
Helena - like
Molly - like but popular at the mo
Eliza - love
Celeste - love
Pippa - i like it
Rita - nice
Ellen - like it but i just see the comdeien

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 18/09/2008 22:58

My votes would be for

Kitty (but only if you put Catherine on the birth certificate, as Kitty to me is a name only for a baby)
Martha
Helena
Pippa (ditto with Philippa. I just can't imagine the Rt Hon Pippa, Foreign Secretary)

Ellbell · 18/09/2008 22:57

In order of preference:

Ellen
Martha
Celeste
Helena
Eliza
Verity
Pippa
Molly
Lyra
Kitty
Rita

Might vary a bit depending on surname (e.g. I really like Celeste but it doesn't go with my dh's surname - would just sound ridiculous!).

you are not allowed to have rita.

it is on my list and no one else was supposed to like it

(that means I like it....)

Reginaphilangy · 18/09/2008 22:55

Ok, here is my opinion:

Kitty - lovely. love it as a nn for Katherine too.
Martha - really don't like this.
Verity - don't like at all.
Lyra - looks too much like lycra.
Helena - pretty.
Molly - very cute.
Eliza - its ok. love Elizabeth.
Celeste - its ok.
Pippa - cute.
Rita - awful.
Ellen - lovely.

My favourites from your list are Kitty, Molly and Helena/Ellen.

My least favourites are Rita, Verity, Lyra and Marth.

Don't like Verity - too Head Girlish. A bit iffy about Celeste, Pippa and Rita. Like all the rest but Helena would be No1. Martha No2.
