Virgil for a name?

I like it, It has a Thunderbirds link, a Steve McQueen link andof course the great Mr Grissom

But would it work?

when she is about 16 she will get teased for the whole virgin/virgil thing

same with a virgil at ds1's nursery

Imho if you want a classical poet go for Homer, Virgil just copied him.

Although Simpson connotations don't help. Read the Aeneid & then decide...

my bump is Virgil......we can't think of a boy's name we agree on so it looks like Virgil might stick. I think it's FAB (d'ye see what I did there? )....

....especially when said in the local thick Yorkshire accent!

Oh OK, I can see the pedigree there. I'd have the Virgil in the middle though to be honest, especially as you aren't actually going to use it.

BTW the Thunderbirds were named after the 1st astronauts John Glenn, Virgil Grissom, Gordon Cooper, Alan Shepard and Scott Carpenter

Augustus and Constantine are both lovely names. Personally, I'd go for Virgil Augustus (Gus) Emmanuel. In fact, had DH not very strongly vetoed both Gus and Emmanuel, I would have used them both myself!!

If you are going to call your child Gus why are you planning on naming him something quite different (and difficult)? Call him Angus, Augustine, Augustus or August, or Fergus or Gustav/Gustavo (or Constantine - apparently Gus is a shortening of that - not sure how!).

Mr Grissom is Virgil? I've gone right off him now.
There was one in Memphis Belle also.
Probably not helping much here am I, I'll go to another thread.

Now, I love Gus. If I had another DS, he would be Gus without a doubt. If he's not going to be known as Virgil, go for it!!

Well it's DH's idea and it has grown on me over time TBH

He wouldn't be called Virgil, just named Virgil. In honour of DH's hero he would be known as Gus

I like Virgil, but would probably give it a miss, despite having given my own DCs relatively poncey names. What about Emmanuel (Manu) or Dante? I like both of those, and a Dante can always call himself Dan and claim that he's Daniel!!

There's no problem with being a virgin at any age but that sort of nickname could be torture for a shy, quiet, 15-16 year old boy who is desperate to fit in. to 'impress' the girls..

The shy ones are usually the ones that get tormented by the loud, less studious, kids.

Boys make the comment, all the teenage girls snigger because anything to do with sexuality seems to make teenage girls giggle.. boy goes red.. more ammo for the loud mouths

For me the most immediate associations were with Latin poetry and Thunderbirds. I wouldn't have thought of Virgil the Virgin and agree that almost any name (or bodily characteristic) has the potential for teasing if a child is inclined to be a tease or bully.

For me, the name is on the borderline between interesting and unusual and poncetastic and pretentious. I think much depends on your neighbourhood. If you really like the name and there are likely to be several Ptolemys and Clytemnestras in the class, then go for it!

What's so awful about being a virgin anyway, particularly when you're 8 (guessing that that's about the age level for this type of "humour")??
