This is another on my shortlist. I'm not keen on having Esme alone I like it more as a nickname and I love Esmeralda.
Is it too much?

i think Esmeralda is great. classic romany name meaning Emerald. and you can and will probably call her Esme anyway. i think it's nice to have the option

HonoriaGlossop · 10/09/2008 12:38

LaDiDaDi, was going to suggest Emerald. So, so pretty and very unusual.

LaDiDaDi · 10/09/2008 12:36

Esmeralda is a bit too witchy for me.

Esme is lovely.

What about Emerald? I met a gorgeous Emerald the other day. Could be Emmie as a nn??

Umlellala · 10/09/2008 12:33

I love it - but dh said No. Too witchy. Personally, I don't mind the witch association .

3andnomore · 08/09/2008 21:01

Esmeralda-yuk

Esme, what a gorgeous name

cece · 08/09/2008 16:01

Esme is becomming increasingly popular. There are two in DD's infants school.

barmybaby, oh sorry I didn't mean just you. Everybody in the whole thread bar the last poster has spelt it with an e.

I love Esme. I hate Esmeralda.

babybarmy · 08/09/2008 15:48

sorry..I misspelled it! You should choose what you like..my family and friends have all given their opinions with such gusto I was trying to please them and lost sight of what my DH and I like.

They can all name or have named their own kids..It's our turn now :-)!!

parchment · 08/09/2008 15:36

It's Esmeralda!! Esmerelda is a wrong spelling
the mispelling is putting me off the name more than anything else or is that the idea

I have a friend who's called their baby just that. Don't know that she'll ever use the full name, but short version is sweet.

babybarmy · 08/09/2008 15:29

I'm about to have a baby and we plan to call her Esme Camille. Don't like Esmerelda at all..sounds too witchy and features in of fantasy films, books etc.

Esme is softer and quite unusual still..although its seems now that there are more around than I thought!

Anna8888 · 08/09/2008 14:31

Don't like either name much.

parchment · 08/09/2008 14:26

It's spelled Esmeralda (orig from Emerald),so why is everybody spelling it Esmerelda?
That might be another black mark against it

pagwatch · 08/09/2008 14:21

I have to say no on the basis that that is what my ex flat mate used to call her vagina.

AnnVan · 08/09/2008 14:14

I rather like Esme, only thing for me is I'm a HUGE Terry Pratchett fan, so Esme naturally conjures up the surname 'Weatherwax' and images of a witch with a broom that doesn't work properly

regularlyoverwhelmed · 08/09/2008 14:11

oh it's lovely, and she need never call herself esmerelda (but she may just love having it in her back pocket so to speak) I'd love to have the option of calling myself Esmerelda when I felt like it. In fact may just change name by deed poll now you've put the thought into my mind go for it

Megglevache · 08/09/2008 14:09

I like just Esme, very popular here, it's so pretty.

JuneBugJen · 08/09/2008 14:08

Esme gorgeous.

Like the other I am picturing a hunchback hanging from a bell tower with Esmerelda.

mazzystar · 08/09/2008 14:07

Esme is okay but Esmerelda is just a bit too panto for my liking.

nailpolish · 08/09/2008 14:07

what is wrong with Esme on its own?

she would not thank you for Esmerelda IMO

EffiePerine · 08/09/2008 14:07

Very Terry Pratchett. Not necessarily a bad thing

clairebear88 · 08/09/2008 14:05

Hi

Esme is a pretty name but I think Esmerelda is not. Definately the notre dame thing that ruins it for me im afraid

bigknickersbigknockers · 08/09/2008 14:05

Esme YES Esmarelda NO (makes me think of Hunchback too)

WigWamBam · 08/09/2008 14:03

Not overly keen on Esmerelda - it's the Hunchback of Notre Dame connection for me as well, I think. I can't see the name written witout hearing the hunchback character from the film saying it.

I really like Esme though.
