I'm only newly pg so it's early days as yet. But dh suggested this to me yesterday. I do like it, but wander if it's a name that would suit a teenage boy. He said we could shorten it to Gabe.

I'm not sure, what are your thoughts?

Ds1 is called Gabriel and i have only ever had wonderful comments about it. He is now three and i have lost count of the amount of times people have said "oh what a beautiful name" so people mispronounce it Gabrielle but i just correct them and most can get over it. Although you can pronounce it that way if your wish like Aston Villa footballer Gabriel Agbonlahour. Only one person shortens to Gabe and that not very often.
My daughter was nearly 5 when her little brother was born and she has always described her little brother as "her angel gabriel"

Thankyou- I have warmed considerably to this name and cant even begin to think of the baby as something else now. So if this one turns out to be a boy (we have 3 girls already). Then he will have this name. Thanx for all your input.

I LOOOVE the name Gabriel and the shorting to Gabe unfortunaly it doesn't go with our surname (I blame dh soley for that!!!!!!).

rolledhedgehog · 02/09/2008 15:50

I have a 6 month old Gabriel. I have also had lots of people pronouncing it Gabrielle even when they know he is a boy...annoying but I don't regret using it....yet!

Pinkglow · 01/09/2008 16:57

I went to school with 2 Gabriels and not once did we called them 'Gay' - Alot of ppl with normal boring names got picked on though (not because of their name) fact is if ppl want to bully someone they will regardless of their name

I like it

3andnomore · 23/08/2008 10:32

I like it

notasheep · 23/08/2008 08:29

Looooooove it.Wanted it for ds.
Gabriel Oak always come to mind

JRocks · 23/08/2008 08:25

I like it. Couldn't use it, as with the shortening and DP's surname would have sounded like his name was 'Gay Paris' (Gabe Perry)

slayerette · 23/08/2008 08:23

My nephew (8) is called Gabriel. He did come home from school one day asking my sis why she had given him a girl's name and he does get some teasing as a result of it. It seems more people than you might think can't distinguish between Gabriel and Gabrielle, and it does get pronounced the second way by some. Doesn't help that one of DH's relations has a daughter called Gabriel!

cheesychips · 23/08/2008 06:58

I love it and really, really wanted it vetoed by husband who is sure that we are not out of the woods yet with boys thinking that 'GAY' is a huge insult! He took a straw poll amongst his friends and got a resounding DON'T DO IT! (I blame the fact that most of those went to all boys schools)

I would still have used it though :-(

Becoming more popular - I have taught 3 Gabes

Mandalin · 23/08/2008 05:24

That's our 3rd son's name. He was 'Gaby baby' initially, now he's 3, he's Gabe alot and also Gabriel of course. He answers to all three.

What does annoy us is how so many people put the stress in the wrong place and call him GabriELL, rather than GABE riel.

But we love the name, it's uncommon but not so much that no one has heard of it (for a boy).

Weegiemum · 23/08/2008 00:32

No. I really really don't like it.

Just ... euuugh ... no.

Not a name I would use

(might be that I have been a secondary school teacher and seen what kids can do with any name out of the ordinary .. or even with the ordinary)

Just ... [visceral feeling] NO

jellybeans · 22/08/2008 23:44

Not that keen but it's not as bad as some.

strawberrycornetto · 22/08/2008 23:42

I love it. Thought of it for DS but wasn't brave enough. Kind of wish I had been though. Go for it.

vicsta · 22/08/2008 23:36

Right then. speaking from experience. I have a wonderful 9 week old son called Gabriel (obviously I LOVE LOVE LOVE it). Was originally vetoed by DP who said 'everyone'll think he's a girl' to which I said 'nooooooo, nobody's that stupid DP'. After a very difficult labour and delivery I got my way. Now, I have lost count at the number of times our Gabe has been called Gabrielle. Even those who pronounce it Gabe-ree-al still call him 'she'. I blame the Nativity!
Just about everyone I have introduced to him have commented on his fantastic name. Only one instance of the link with Angel - long sad story but our Gabe ended up in SCBU for some time. One of the, shall we say more experienced nurses, commented that she loved the name and hadn't heard it in years when the previous Gabriel she cared for had a little girl neighbour in the unit called Angel. How sweet. We call him Angel. He is our Angel. Hope you use it xxxxx

MrsMattie · 22/08/2008 21:02

I like it.

MKG · 22/08/2008 19:44

Oh should have explained. Dh's side of the family is Mexican and would pronounce the name like the girls name Gabrielle not the male version Gabriel. That is why I'll never get to use it. Even though it has come to mind in all three pregnancies.

janeite · 22/08/2008 19:27

I think it's lovely - don't like Gabe though.

chapstickchick · 22/08/2008 19:23

i absolutely adore it and if i had another son hed be called gabriel

Tortington · 22/08/2008 19:22

why would you ever give your kid a name that is going to be shortened to GAY???????

just buy him a t shirt that says " rip the piss ot of me all my effing life!"

choosyfloosy · 22/08/2008 19:20

Great name.

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 22/08/2008 19:17

Great name!

whatawally · 22/08/2008 19:17

why is that MKG?

So far it seems like it might be a good choice. Thanx for your opinions. I already have 3 dds so i'm not even sure the chances are very good on this one being a boy. There are lots of girls in my family and practically no boys whatsoever.
