Leif for a boy?? means 'beloved'

minkersmum · 21/08/2008 22:46

trying to find a boys name that me and dp both like, really struggling.

He likes Euan and Ivan

I like Flynn and Archie

Whilst i 'don't mind' his names he hates my suggestions.

Girls names not a problem, why are boys names so much harder.

So i found Leif, quite like it but thinking is it manly enough?? Dp likes it (tonight).

Opinions please.

love it! we named our bump Leif, had dd in the end, was tempted to call her Leaf but thought may wait and see if we have boy next time!

GrapeJelly · 23/08/2008 10:54

It's lovely and would suit a boy at any age.

3andnomore · 23/08/2008 10:45

How would you pronounce it?
like Leaf or like Life?

tut at your dh for hating the name Flynn...ts...no taste that man .....but you got brilliant taste of course

minkersmum · 22/08/2008 12:34

I did ponder over how 'manly' it sounds but i feel once you give someone a name they just become it IYKWIM. When i called my son Fergus the name made me think of a big strapping bloke down the rugby club with his mates, not the small delicate child he was at the time, but he is far from delicate now!!

its like Stan and Alfie etc, they were mostly thought of as old men names because they hadn't been heard of for years but now i know lots of little people with these names.

People grow with or into their names IMHO.

Not sure about Leif - ok for an ickle boy but not sure about a teenager/man. Like Ivan and Ivo

minkersmum · 22/08/2008 12:01

mm quite like it pronounced layfe... food for thought.
Didn't get a chance to ask dp if he still liked it this morning!!

glad no one hates it, but just still feel i don't love it yet. still a possibility tho, if this baby is a boy of course!

Midwives go on call for my birth on monday so hopefully not too long til we see!

I think it can be pronounced either way - so guess you pick the way you like and go with it..

Umlellala · 22/08/2008 10:56

(PS congrats on finding a name you both like!!)

Umlellala · 22/08/2008 10:56

Oh, I really like it
Thought it was pronounced like Leaf.

Cosette · 22/08/2008 10:40

I like it too, and work with a Leif. He does sometimes have to tell people how to pronounce it (Layf), but I think it's nice that he can be referred to by just his first name, and not his surname as well.

G2B · 22/08/2008 10:36

I like Leif

ShowOfHands · 22/08/2008 10:34

It's nice and a bit different. I like Ivan too, but prefer Ivo.

lastboxoftampons · 22/08/2008 10:31

I dated a boy named Leif when I was in high school I like it.

How do you intend to pronounce it? I've heard it like LEAF or LIFE, but his was pronounced LAYFE

Yes it's cool.
Also thought of Leif Erikson

purplemunkey · 21/08/2008 23:17

I have a friend called Leaf ( his name is spelt like that by the way - hippy parents maybe?)

I really like it as a name actually. Although he'll probably spend his whole life spelling it out for people and being called Lee!

onebatmother · 21/08/2008 23:15

then you and I, cece, are both lesbians.

scottishmummy · 21/08/2008 23:15

scottishmummy · 21/08/2008 23:05

dont know who leif garrett is.but hey Euan is a winner

Snowleopard · 21/08/2008 23:03

It makes me think of 10th-century Viking explorer Leif Eiriksson. And it doesn't get much cooler than that...

cece · 21/08/2008 22:59

I was just going to say Leif Garret as well. Showing our age

ChippyMinton · 21/08/2008 22:52

PS I like the name!
