Hey!! My son is called Edmund (Ted)! Nothing barmy about that!

susiecutiebananas · 22/08/2008 00:29

my ex landlady was called Candida - incredibly unfortunate IMO - but i'm a nurse, so maybe that one goes over many heads. At least i hope so!

Also my friend has a Maleana - which is the medical term for a certai type of poo which is mainly blood! again, thankfully, not everyone is aware of that.

Went to school with a girl called Ghilaine ( pronounced 'Shil - lane ) whos little brother was called Kester.

I know a Ghizella )

Poppet - girl. always made me think of my dog Poppet!

Pui-pui pronounced Poo-Poo (Filipino)

Loads and loads of african nurses I've worked with called Patience, Destiny, Comfort, Joy, Honesty, peace etc...

The Filipinos use many of our old fashioned English names like; Ralph, Edmund, Riley, Doris, Vera, Ethel - I kid you not, have worked with all these, plus many more of this type of name!

Banjo.

I kid you not,...!

I know a "Lucky" (girl). But I thought that was actually quite sweet as she was a miracle baby.

There are so many unusual names around lately that I think it would take a lot to shock me. Have come across two Chardonnays now..both of them have rather loud shouty mothers who scream the name putting a lot of emphasis on the "aaaaayyy" sound at the end!

Met twins a few years back called Justin and Britney.

How times move on eh? Would be Justin and Jessica or Britney and Valium now i suppose.

blackrock · 21/08/2008 21:16

Blandmum · 21/08/2008 18:30

Someone on MN was considering calling her ds to be Alias.

Which I thought quite odd!

mrsmalumbas · 21/08/2008 18:22

DH and I lived in Asia for many years. Chinese people working with expats often choose an English name as well - the women usually choose pretty names like Angel, but often times the choices can be inadvertently hilarious. DH had two men in his team, one called Sellotape, and one called Photo! Not quite baby names, but funnny nonetheless.

A knew a Shitpan at primary school. Poor chap. Seriously. Didn't realise till we were 8 or 9 that it wasn't a good name to have.
