I'm going for Arabic with an english middle name, but with the boys I want something that could be shortened to something easy. So-

Girls-
Laila (fave)
Samira
Zara/Zahra/Sara
Amina
Mina
Leila

Boys-
Abdel Ali (Ali)
Bilal (Billy? But I like Bilal as it is)
Kamil (too girly?)
Nasir (Nas...too rapper?)
Samir (Sammy - fave)
Ismael (not easy to shorten but I love it)

I REALLY like Laila Rose or Samir ...something.

Well, Kat, if your baby is a girl, then definitely stick with Laila Rose. Its a truly beautiful, elegant and pretty name

I was definitely ( ahem- with no consultation with DH! ) going to call Isobel "TOBY,Charles... plus 2 other middle names from his family! until 'he' was a she!!!

I had NO idea what a girls name could be so didn't think about it. LIke I said above, once I knew, it just came to me and really stuck. It would have been the same if we'd not known until birth, i'm sure of it. She has always suited her name.

So I think for you, if it turns out that Laila Rose is not growing in there but you have a little boy growing, you will find his name, and it will be just right for him too

good luck

I love Zahra - whichever spelling. It is a very pretty name and goes well in both (British / Arabic) cultures. Also, think Samir works well in both cultures too, because it can always be shortened to Sam, if he so desires or full name - whatever takes his fancy. HTH

Bbbee · 23/07/2008 07:34

all lovely.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 23/07/2008 07:30

Susie, thjat's really sweet! I just see this baby as my daughter and she's called Laila Rose, but I don't know what I'll do if it's a boy!

I love the girls names, works really well across both cultures, and Rose as an english middle name, is just beautiful with names you have suggested, also, a very english name

Not so sure about the boys names, but only because they're not so familiar to me. I must say though, that the names suggested by Redinthehead, for boys are lovely !

"Kamran (Kam), Rohan (ro),Haris (Harry) and Suleiman (Sul), but settled on Aydin (known as Aydie)" All of these again, sound so lovely, really 'boys' names IYSWIM? sound like good strong men!, also they cross both cultures really well too.

Good luck! AS with another poster, I'd also say, stick with you 'gut instinct' / fav's... they're your favs for a reason...

When I was pg with my DD, i was convinced she was a boy. At the scan they told us she was a girl, I couldn't believe it.I had no idea what names I liked for girls, there were a few i'd always thought I'd have... a week or so later, I just looked down at my bump and I knew her name was going to be Isobel, Charlotte [surname] I just knew. It was really odd.

When I told my DH, he went really quiet, and I thought he didn't like it. He then said, "my granny was called Isobel, spelt the same, and it was my mums middle name and my niece is called Charlotte" his aunt was called Charlotte Isobel!! I had no idea at all, it was a lovely moment.

I told a good friend ( ex boyfriend actually) about it a few days later, and he said, "don't you remember you had a dream you had a toddler called Isobel with red hair and we were playing with her in the garden, but she wasn't mine" It had freaked him out at the time and he'd not forgotten it! Oh how true it bloody was, I do have a red haired toddler called Isobel who we play in the garden with together often !!!!

Samira and Samara are different names. Miriam is lovely but my SIL is named Merieme so no good! Amir is also lovely but we have friends whose DS is Amir.

Lovely names All the girl ones are fab - my favs of the boys names are Kamil, Samir and Ismael (I know one shortened to Maele (pronounced Male-y)

mavornia · 22/07/2008 21:41

ooh, Miriam is lovely

also like Sara from your list

I live in Egypt and some of my other favourite names for boys that I know are Amir (means prince) and Karim

I also like Malika for a girl (means angel)

artichokes · 22/07/2008 21:23

Miriam is also a nice girlsname with arabic roots.

PavlovtheCat · 22/07/2008 21:19

Samira - is that not spelt Samara, or is that another Arabic name?

redinthehead · 22/07/2008 21:18

Had the same (arabic first name, english middle name) for ds. I love Samir, also Samei, ds was going to be Samir, but when he was born he just didnt look lke a Samir at all. Still love name though. Also like Ismael on your list. We also considered Kamran (Kam), Rohan (ro),Haris (Harry) and Suleiman (Sul), but settled on Aydin (known as Aydie)

For girls I like Leila but there are a lot around at the moment. Also like Amina and Sara. We are now expected dd, considered all girls names on your list, but now thinking about Hannah (Hana is arabic spelling) or Sophie/Sofia.

What other names have you considered...I still need inspiration for girls names so would welcome ideas!

artichokes · 22/07/2008 21:12

Amina is nice. Have you thought of Amira (on our middle name short list)?

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 22/07/2008 21:11

Thanks everyone! I'm leaning to Laila and Samir, but Bilal and Zahra close seconds!

I suppose I should discuss it with DH.....

go with your fave's you always regret it otherwise

Hulababy · 22/07/2008 21:04

I like Laila Rose

LuLuBai · 22/07/2008 20:58

All the girls names are beautiful. Boys I would go for Samir or Ismael or possibly Bilal. I've known one or two Ismaels and it has never been shortened, but I don't see that as a problem.

bluenosesaint · 22/07/2008 20:50

I love all your girls names - sooooo pretty!

Out of your boys names, I like Samir best.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 22/07/2008 16:50

Couldn't have Samir and Samira tho - so I'd have to choose! I prefer Samir to Samira I think.

Heated · 22/07/2008 16:49

I like all your girl's names, particularly Zahra & Laila. Rose would be a very pretty mn.

For boys I like Ismael, the only shortening I've heard is to 'Izz' when pn, but the other name on your list I really like is Nasir.

mamasaid · 22/07/2008 16:48

Samira/Zahra/Ismael. All lovely. And I like Samir too.

janeite · 22/07/2008 16:48

Sorry - just that my latest one has an "h"!

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 22/07/2008 16:47

It would have to be Ismael though, Ishmael sounds too Jewish which would just be confusing.

HumphreySmallPillow · 22/07/2008 16:43

I love Samira for a girl.
And Ismael for a boy.
