Which of these three girls' names is nicest?

I am sure I will start another 200 names threads before this baby actually arrives but tonight DH and I have a shortlist of three. What do you think of them?

Katherine (known as Kitty)
Dorothea (known as Dora or Dotty)
Sophia

One I love and he is unsure, one is vice versa and the third we both think is nice but neither of us love.

Sophia is my favourite, I think it's a lovely name.

MrsWeasley · 19/07/2008 19:28

Sophia is my favourite

Katherine , would probably use katie not kitty because we have a few kitty's near us

Dorothea not keen. sorry

Podrick · 19/07/2008 19:27

No t keen on Katherine and she will be forever spelling it out
The others are nice

Elkat · 19/07/2008 19:25

I think Katherine Sophia sounds like a lovely name. I also like Kitty. Cute, but can revert to something more mature when she grows up. Not keen on Dorothea though.

As for spelling, I'd go with Katherine with the 'E'. My daughter is a Katherine, and you rarely see the name on the books and pens etc these days, but when you do it is always with an 'E'. So if your little one wants her name on stickers, pens etc.... you need the 'E' .

Kitty is lovely (friend has just had a dd called Kitty short for Kathleen)

Sophia is lovely too

Dorothea just reminds me of Middlemarch

MrsJohnCusack · 18/07/2008 23:02

i like them all but think that what your mother said swings it towards Dorothea

another possible shortening could be Dodie (I used to know one whose name ended up shortened to that and I have a friend Dodie, AND DD has somehow ended up having that nick name too so I'm very keen on it)

funnypeculiar · 18/07/2008 22:49

Love Dorothea/Thea (not keen on Dotty or Dora myself) and think the connection to your mother & Middlemarch is lovely.
Like Katharine/Kitty too

Sophia somehow feels like a compromise name - plus there are a lot of em round here, so I've got a bit bored of it.

Good luck!!

LongLiveGreenElizabeth · 18/07/2008 22:41

Wow. I am not keen on Dorothea, but when I read what your mother said to you, i think you HAVE to get the name in, at the very least in the middle slot.

I really like Thea as a nn for Dorothea.

allytjd · 18/07/2008 22:40

I like Dorothea, I like it shortened to Thea though, second choice Katherine, Sophia too common at the moment.

Linnet · 18/07/2008 22:37

Sophia

onelittlelion · 18/07/2008 22:37

Sophia then Katherine for me too.

Dottoressa · 18/07/2008 22:34

Grotty Dotty? Snottty Dotty? Dotty's botty? Dot's got the trots?

Surely it isn't worth it.

I do like diminutives generally (my DD's name is a not-very-common diminutive of an equally not-very-common-but-not-outlandish longer name), but it's worth checking the rhymes in advance!!

I'd also leave scope for your diminutive DD to be a heaving hockey-player in later life (as my ginormous DD appears to be almost the same size as me, despite being only just four, her "cute" little-girl name may not suit her forever!!)

electra · 18/07/2008 15:22

Sophia for me

cyteen · 18/07/2008 15:15

Sophia is my favourite. Katherine is nice, with plenty of attractive nickname options (particularly like Kitty).

Dorothea is not good, and Dotty is just awful.

bossykate · 18/07/2008 12:00

all full names charming. not so keen on diminutives kitty and dotty.

TigerFeet · 18/07/2008 11:59

Katherine Dorothea is lovely

and also happens to be very very close to my RL name

I would have loved to have been Katherine spelled with a K shortened to Kitty

marmalady · 18/07/2008 11:52

Dorothea

LadyThompson · 18/07/2008 11:48

Hi Arti. Dorothea wins by a very long chalk. It's lovely. I find the others a little so-so (sorry)

Chocolateteapot · 18/07/2008 09:07

Katherine - gives lots of options for shortening as mentioned before. Thank goodness it does as DD's new class at Middle school will now have Katherine, Katie (really a Katherine) and Katrina.

DanJARMouse · 18/07/2008 08:59

Katherine

LilRedWhiskGers · 18/07/2008 08:58

Dorothea

Nancy66 · 18/07/2008 08:57

I love Kitty as a stand alone name but I like Katharine too.

Dorothea I'm not wild about and really dislike sophia - think it's a very 'harsh' sounding name and not at all feminine. it's also very popular and over used.

CharlotteYork · 18/07/2008 08:54

I love Katherine / Kittty

Think Sophia sounds rubbish if you are not from the Med!

I like them all but I know lots of babies called Sophia, so I think it's getting quite popular - don't know if you mind that or not.

Katherine is a lovely classic name (see Anne of Green Gables for why it's better spelt with a K than a C) and Kitty is sweet.

I think I like Dorothea/Dora/Dotty best though. Unusual but a 'proper' name. I'd go for that one.
