Baby names

Find baby name inspiration and advice on the Mumsnet Baby Names forum.

AIBU to think that when the baby is born the midwives should pull a Harry Potter Style 'sorting hat' from their bag and HE should name the baby?! This is far too hard!

I quite like Penn as a shorty.

LuLuBai · 15/07/2008 10:37

Oh Penelope is very pretty. An Nell is a fairly 'now' abbreviation (Penny seems a little old - approaching 60ish)

LazyLinePainterJane · 15/07/2008 08:10

Thanks Heated, was starting to think that no-one else in the world liked penelope I like Prudence too.

Heated · 14/07/2008 20:03

Blythe has sisters and cousins with the names Hallelujah (Halle), Prudence, Honoria & Hosannah (Anna) - they never wear shoes and look like they've stepped out of the Boden catalogue

Sim43 · 14/07/2008 14:23

I like Blythe that's nice.

Heated · 14/07/2008 14:11

Millicent
Nell
Hannah
Miriam
Charlotte/Lottie

Yup, you have a hard decision. I had about 20 names for a girl and one for a boy, fortunately I had a DS - sorted! Good luck, let us know what you decide on.

LazyLinePainterJane · 14/07/2008 13:44

Well, you are right there, Sim, if there are 20 names I like and 2 he likes, the odds are with me, right?

I don't like Grace, well I think it is nice in theory but it's a bit of a gamble, a name that is a quality, IYSWIM. It is also VERY popular, which puts me off.

Sim43 · 14/07/2008 13:39

Sorry that last one was for Lazypainterjane.

Sim43 · 14/07/2008 13:39

Definately, write them all down and pull one out of the hat. Of course if you don't like the one chosen you should go for best of 3!! Or just refuse point blank to have that name if you don't want. The chances are it might be one you have chosen, if so job done!

Heated · 14/07/2008 13:39

Literbug, with an Addison & a Dexter I would guess you'd go for modern British, so for boys how about:

Harris
Elliot
Jonas
Finlay
Finn
Jesse
Oscar
Elijah
Miles
Rohan
Ruben
Evan
Brod y
Luc
Tate
Heath
Xander
Zach

MatNanPlus · 14/07/2008 13:16

Grace is nice LLPJ

Litterbug love those 2 names :
B-Hayden
G-Brooke

LazyLinePainterJane · 14/07/2008 13:16

No Sim, we haven't
cries

Am fed up. Am asking DH to write a list with 10 names on it that he would seriously consider as him only coming up with 2 is seriously pissing me off. He also thinks that because he has only thought of 2, they should get more serious consideration than any of mine. He thinks it is not possible to come up with 10 names....

Lucky dip?

seeker · 14/07/2008 13:03

Did someone say that Matthew doesn't have an "F" sound in it? It does in our bit of Kent!

BlueChampagne · 14/07/2008 13:02

Give yourself a break and think of some of the most unsuitable names to go with your surname! Caused much enjoyment in our house.

Sim43 · 14/07/2008 12:29

Lazypainterjane, have you narrowed it down to any yet?

LazyLinePainterJane · 14/07/2008 11:30

Sim, am sowing my oats!

littlewoman · 14/07/2008 11:29

I like Eleanor and Ruth. They go very nicely together.

littlewoman · 14/07/2008 11:23

Omg, not on your life should you let him name baby (or at least, not if he's half as much a kernob as my XH. No offence, I'm sure your dh is not).

XH wanted to call DS1 Paris. Very nice name, except we live on a housing estate where life ain't easy for a boy named Gay Parree.

Don't let him! Keep thinking

Fimbo · 14/07/2008 10:53

I think they should just be known as Child 1 , Child 2 etc and then they can pick their own names at say 21. Whatever you give them, they will not like anyway.

Sim43 · 14/07/2008 10:52

lazypainterjane, havn't we been down this road before?

Litterbug · 14/07/2008 10:50

My boys are Addison and Dexter

Don't know the sex yet so am struggling to think of names for both!
