Who has a ds called Lawrence, Duncan or Dominic?

If you do, can you tell me how old they are, whether their name gets shortened at all, and if so, what to?

Please note that I'm not interested in hearing from people who don't like these names, as dh and I are just about quite capable of picking for ourselves .

My ds's middle name is Duncan. Love love love it, sometimes wish I had used it as his first name.

My dh's mate is called Dominic (over 40!) but doesn't get shortened.

This thread is proving very helpful so far, so thank you ladies for contributing.

I think we may have relegated Lawrence to 3rd place as a result of this, despite us still loving it in its full version. The fact that more of you are spelling it Laurence tells me that he will have it misspelled all his life (a problem already inflicted on myself and dd), and whilst not disliking the shortenings out there, we don't love them either.

For its short format I think Duncan is edging ahead, although we have been referring to him as Dominic for a while, so will have to see if we can get our heads round using something different for a bit.

We have another 3 months to decide for definite.

I should have included Barnaby in the list too, but may have to do a separate thread for that now, as no reason why mothers of Barnabies should click on this thread at all.

I know Dominic (Dom, early thirties)
and Duncan (20) who is usually Duncan and occasionally Dunc and Laurence (16) who is never shortened

saggyhairyarse · 08/07/2008 12:27

No children called any of these names but know of 2 Dominics (1 late twenties, 1 is 4) both of them get called Dom. Know of 2 Duncans, 1 late thirties, 1 late twenties) both of them get called Duncan and I know of Laurence, my Dad who is 60, and he gets called Laurence but used to be nicknamed Larry.

auntyspan · 08/07/2008 12:20

My BIL is a Laurence and gets called Loz, Lol and Laurie.

I know a Duncan and a Dominic, they get shortened to Dunc and Dom respectively.

hana · 08/07/2008 12:18

I love the name Duncan!
sadly had no boys and dh vetoed it from the start

There is a Laurence in dd's preschool, he is 4.

There is a Dominic in a different dd's year 1 class.

All gorgeous names

branflake81 · 08/07/2008 12:16

I know a Duncan (aged 27) who gets called Dunc.

brimfull · 08/07/2008 09:55

I have a brother called Laurence,he is nearly 50 and lives in Canada where he is mostly called Laurence ,occasionally Larry.

He was never called anything but Laurence by the family.

I also have a friend(in UK) ,in his 40's, called Laurence who is regularly called Loz

Neighbour is Duncan who is called Duncan .

lollyheart · 08/07/2008 09:50

I just wanted to say i love the name laurence i have a lauren her name also gets shortened to loz

nellyup · 08/07/2008 09:32

I used to know a Dominic (early 30's now) who shortened it to Nick.

Years ago I think people used to shorten Laurence to Larry - I'm sure that was my Great Uncle Larry's full name.

CantSleepWontSleep · 08/07/2008 09:30

Yes Tommy - I think Duncan was in six hundred and something place in the boys name lists last year. I know of one MNer whose ds has it as a middle name. I also know one adult Duncan who we call Duncs.
