Parents in law mispronounce daughter’s name

My daughter is 18 months old and called Adeline (pronounced add-eh-line), which we shorten to Addie. My parents in law were very blunt when they discovered we had named her that - they weren’t mean as such, they just said it wasn’t to their taste and they knew someone called Adelyn (prounounced add-eh-lin) who they disliked. I potentially knew that it wouldn’t be liked by all, but was slightly gutted by their reaction.

Since then, they seem incapable of calling her Adeline correctly - they flip between called her ‘add-eh-lin’ and ‘add-eh-leen’ more than her actual name. We politely correct them every time and reiterate that there are a few pronunciations, but we have personally opted for our version. No one else seems to have the same issue, apart from strangers who go for the incorrect version maybe 25% of the time. I don’t mind that at all as I’m fully aware there are different versions, but the fact that my in laws are repeatedly corrected and they still can’t get it right is starting to really irk me. Our 4 year old son has started correcting them as well 🙈

How can I get through to them that I would really really prefer them to call her by her correct name, or simply by her nickname, Addie?

Just to throw them a bone, is it possible that it's innocent and it's just that their brain is defaulting to the wrong pronunciation? Or are they showing no remorse at all?

Just as a mother of a new baby with a name which shares all the letters with another name, but they're actually pronounced differently....and DH cannot seem to get it right. He calls her by the wrong name at least once a week. Even I've done it once 🫣 and our neighbours did it, and a kid at school who wouldn't have ever seen it written down. It's actually funny now.

Though I'm hoping she finds it equally amusing if it turns out to be a life long thing 😅

Europeans tend to put additional letters in my name when I've had to email stuff for work. Can happen innocently.

You can't because this is not about the name, this is about power and control.

Not necessarily. I think in my mother’s case it was flusteredness, a genuine mental block, and a (largely unconscious) worry that the name reflected badly on her (as ‘too unusual’) when she said it around other people. It sorted itself out over time.

Such a beautiful name - Adeline.

Make them watch the lovely (although a little sad) film The Age of Adeline on repeat until they get it!

And like others have said - mispronounce their names, grandparents can be can be awfully stubborn! Firmly and loudly correct them every single time.

If it’s not deliberate, I’d just keep correcting them. Remind them it’s similar to Caroline, that can’t be hard to remember.

If it’s deliberate, which sounds more likely, I’d just be blunt - ‘you know that’s not her name’ ‘why do you pretend to not know her name’ ‘rather than this passive aggressive mispronunciation, just stick with Addie’. Make them squirm or explain their reasons for being such arses.

It’s a lovely name.

This thread is baffling. I know several Adelines and they are all Ah-duh-line. I have literally never heard of ah-duh-linn or ah-duh-leen. There is no reason they can’t pronounce a perfectly normal and relatively common name. Tbh this is a game you will win long term, as your dd will start correcting them soon!

Ha, me too!! Didn’t realise it would create such a divide! I know two Adeline’s who pronounce it like mine. I would never pronounce a Caroline or Madeline to rhyme with ‘leen’. Maybe ‘lyn’, but that’s commonly more Madelyn or Carolyn.

@Strudel1984
You got 2 choices because you seem really lovely and cooperative

  1. Mispronounce their names till the cows come home and if they say anything stare blankly
  2. Tell DH to pull his socks up and tell his ridiculous parents to stop living in the past with their useless memories whilst also upsetting their other grandchild
And the one I'd probably use myself; Tell them not to visit You even gave them the option of a nickname but they just couldn't be arsed could they?? Winduppers of the worst calibre going

Slightly outing for me but I also have an Adeline who is 11 and generally goes by Addie. It is a fantastic name and I still love it!

Firstly, I'd say about 90% of people say her name correctly first time (add-uh-line), occasionally we have an add-uh-leen, but never ever an add-uh-lyn. It has always been people reading it off a piece of paper (teachers for the first time, doctors etc...) and, once politely corrected, it has never been an issue.

Secondly, with your PILs, we had this with my dad and his wife and my son's name. We corrected them every time, and, after months of them still doing it (and we were sure it was deliberate - they have form), I very politely suggested that they go for a check up as they were both clearly struggling to retain basic information such as their grandson's name and I was concerned this could be the start of some form of dementia. Suddenly they had no problem at all.

Oh and we made up this song:

Clap hands clap hands for Adeline, she is so special and she is all mine,
Clap hands clap hands for Adeline, I love her so much and all of the time.
She is so fine, she is divine, she is so fine and she's going to shine.
Clap hands clap hands for Adeline, I love her so much and all of the time.

Sing it continuously when they are around and it will become an earworm and drive them insane

Sing 'Sweet Adeline' to the tune of Sweet Caroline every time they do it. If your singing's like mine they'll not be getting it wrong

I LOVE this, thank you so much. Trying to find a tune to run this with - is it similar to any known rhymes? Also I am grateful I produced this post as I’ve found a new love for the name again!

Sing to the tune of ‘happy and you know it’, on repeat, every time they get it wrong:

My name in Adeline it rhymes with fine, My name is Adeline it rhymes with fine, ‘Add-eh-lin’ can get in the bin,
Add-eh-leen’, you’re being mean,
My name is Adeline it rhymes with fine!

this is GENIUS!

This isn’t the correct answer and you probably shouldn’t do it, but I’d be tempted to keep mispronouncing this names and see how they like it.

I actually did this once, but it was with regards to spelling my name.. I had a real estate agent whom I had to email back and forth with a lot for whatever reason. She kept spelling my name wrong in the emails despite me signing off each email with my name, and my email address was my name!

I actually brought it up with her in the email chain a couple of times!! She kept spelling it wrong anyways… so yeah, I got frustrated, and decided to spell her name incorrectly in an email. Told myself I’d spell it incorrectly every single time from now on until she spelled mine correctly. It only took 1 or 2 emails before she started spelling my name correctly!! Just goes to show she knew what she was doing all along, such strange behaviour!!

anyways, I had a good laugh about it overall 😅
