Boy name: Cal vs Callan or Calvin

So me and my husband both LOVE the name Cal. In my opinion, Cal is a nickname and I like the full names of either Callan or Calvin. That way he can still go by Cal but have the option when he's an adult of going by a more formal name if he wants. My husband says he's not a fan of any of the full names that Cal comes from so we should just name him Cal as his full name. I'm not against it necessarily, I just have always thought of Cal as a nickname, not a full name. Thoughts and opinions please???

I'm with your husband.

I really like Callan, or Cailean if you’d want a Gaelic name?

I’m with you though, Cal is a nickname and not a full name!

pinkdyno · 02/10/2026 21:17

Callum
Caleb
Callahan.

not a fan of Calvin or callan either.

you could always go like

Cal “middle name” so they have an option.

or
eg
Joshua Cal smith and you just call him Cal.

all the males on dads side are

David something . Nobody is David

I love Callan but not Calvin.

There are other names that start with Cal.
Calum, Caleb, Callahan, Caliban ...

I really like Callan. I’ve not heard it before but it’s a lovely warm sound.

I don’t like the religious associations of Calvin.

I would go with a longer name. I know a little boy with a similar very short name, and even now he’s at school it seems a little odd.

I like Callan a lot. Not so much Calvin.
Do you like Callum or Caleb?

HugoThatway · 02/10/2026 23:14

@pinkdyno , David is popular where I live.

SequinsandSlippers · 03/10/2026 09:51

Caleb is lovely but I would not necessarily have taken Cal from that. It's the one I'd pick though as a 'proper' first name out the choices if you weren't going to the diminutive.
Callum is the good compromise here. Obviously shortens to Cal and is a traditional name. Your son will have it on birth certificate but will adopt Cal throughout (I have done the same. Am only known by my shortened name).

I think Callum or Caleb are much nicer names than Calvin or Callan and both work if you want Cal as a diminutive

lottiegarbanzo · 03/10/2026 10:31

Cal is definitely a nickname. Calvin or Callum are nice. What else is there - Callisto? Anything with Cal at the end or in the middle? Malcolm sort of.

The risk with Cal is that people (children) will lengthen it to create nicknames. Calamari, Calorie, Calamity.

😃

Cal is traditionally a diminutive of Cathal in my neck of the woods.

I’d steer clear of Callan because it reminds me of a glum town in Kilkenny where the founder of the Christian Brothers and Presentation Brothers was born…

cartagenagina · 03/10/2026 10:44

How about Cameron?

I know an absolutely horrible Calvin so I am set against it!

BillieWiper · 03/10/2026 10:49

Calvin rinds me of Calvin Harris or Klein. It's kind of a name for someone with a big ego. Callan reminds me of this awful 'teaching' job I went to at a place called Callan school where they pay the teachers minimum wage and they just spout random words at the students?!

Cal would sound like it's short for something but it's cute enough.

I love Cal for Caleb. It’s James Dean’s role in East of Eden 1953

If they live in England then Cathal is often pronounced CaTHal with the 'th' sound like Ethel. So I wouldn't go with that.

I suggested it because of the book.

estrogone · 03/10/2026 11:21

We have Caelan nn Cal

HettyTagliatelli · 03/10/2026 13:48

I’d go with Callum or Caleb.

HugoThatway · 03/10/2026 14:33

Caligula?

AgnesX · 03/10/2026 14:49

I always thought that Cal was a nickname for Cathal.

Calvin always makes me think of the 1980s cartoon

If you decide it's a full name, then it is! Cal is the name of the young boy in Netflix show Manifest. His full first name.

HugoThatway · 03/10/2026 15:06

Baby name explorer - Cal
He won't be the only one.

FlorenceAndTheVagine · 03/10/2026 15:09

I like Callan. But better just Cal than Calvin imo. Calvin isn’t a nice name.

Mosaic80 · 03/10/2026 15:14

I really like Cal. There’s a Netflix show with a Cal and his full name is California (maybe don’t go with that one… 🤣). I do agree with you though it definitely has more of a nickname feel than say Tom or Sam or Max which now feel like full names potentially now 🤔. I’m not sure why as they all have 3 letters! Maybe they’ve just been used as names long enough and you’ll be ahead of the curve with Cal.

I like Callan best I think from your options, not keen on Calvin. I’m not sure if you’ll always be correcting people who think he is Callum though but I think Callan is nicer than Callum.
