Surname is a noun - this is much harder than I thought!!

During the course of our baby name conversations, I've realised just how bloody difficult it is to pair our surname with any of the names I've been adding to my list.

Our surname is a Lamb. Difficult enough being a noun, and having that pastoral connection, but so many of my previously chosen names just don't work.

Serena Lamb - "serene lamb" sounds like a description of a really chilled out farm animal

Lila - too many 'L' sounds

Elinor "Elin" - same

Cillian - saaaaame why do so many of my fave names have Ls in them?!

Christian - lamb of God... christian... too on the nose

Joshua - SAME because Joshua literally means Jesus

See also: Maria (also brings to mind "Mary had a little lamb")

Roisin Lamb - sounds too much like roast lamb and I can't unhear it!!

Caitriona - would inevitably be shortened to Cat Lamb (also C.Lamb = clam, but I may be overthinking at this point)

Ophelia Lamb - sounds like you're feeling up a lamb

Freya Lamb - and now you're frying the lamb. (F.Lamb also looks a bit like Flambé 😂)

Francesca (girl) or Fran (boy) - Fran Lamb just sounds dreadful.

I've jokingly suggested we all switch to my maiden name instead because his name is making this unnecessarily hard!

A few of my faves that do work have been used by friends, family members, and ex-boyfriends (I mean, how very dare they) so I can't really use them now.

Any advice from those of you who also have awkward surnames?

It's getting to the point where I might have to go with something really plain and traditional, but I don't want to use a name I don't love just to play it safe. Husband has very few suggestions of his own which doesn't help!

I'd never have thought the surname Lamb could be so problematic - but having read your list I can see what you mean!

I'm laughing at Fran Lamb and Flambe

Westfacing · 16/09/2026 19:57

I've just watched the much awaited latest 'Slow Horses' so I'm all for Jackson Lamb!

Not RTFT but there are only two names you can have, @floopyboop . Sean or Henrietta.

I knew a Daniel Lamb. We never thought anything of it when we were kids, or now as an adult!

Many surnames can be problematic with the wrong first name like Jenna/Jenny Taylor, Ali Barber, etc. I also know an Ella Salmon, shit you not! Pick a name that you like and your child will like :)

Whoa Black Betty, Daniel Lamb!

There are lots of names that would work; don't overthink it too much - especially don't go into things like Latin name meanings or anything, that's really just a detail that they or you might find cute rather than anything anyone else will pick up on.

Avoid Iona!!! (I have a noun surname and this error was narrowly avoided). Cameron/Campell/Struan for boys and Kathryn/Ishbel work for girls.

ShapeofanLonmyforehead · 16/09/2026 14:03

You’re massively over thinking it. Except Ophelia, that could lead to some teasing.

just pick a name and go with it. It’s the only way.

Chilly80 · 16/09/2026 14:01

As a fan of alliteration I like lots of Ls

Lins77 · 16/09/2026 13:37

Lamb is a great surname to have!

I agree with whoever said that a more-syllabled first name might work better - that said, half my family have one syllable first names and surnames....

Catherine Lamb
Elizabeth Lamb
Caroline Lamb (didn't she have an affair with Lord Byron?)
Christina Lamb

Yes I do like traditional names 😄

I used to know a lovely old lady called Dorothy Lamb.

Hahah op I agree with you sorry!
i think penny (lane), Serena, Christian, Amanda, Freya and a few others would be off the table for me.

I also like alliteration
Lucas lamb
Lauren lamb
liliana lamb

Amandaland 😂

Seriously, I'm glad so many people have said I'm overthinking it. I am a chronic overthinker, so this tracks.

Also, I'm pleasantly surprised that other people actually quite like our surname - I can't say I was thrilled with it when we got married, but it's always been important to me to share the same name as my husband and children so it was never an option to go with anything else really.

I think you’re worrying a bit too much. I wouldn’t even think twice about Joshua, Christian or Maria being christian/religious.

what about:
Hugo, Arthur, Jude, Oscar/Oliver, Eddie/Edward
Margot, Harriet/Beatrice/Beatrix, Elodie, Imogen, Edie

In my area, Arthur Lamb would be indistinguishable from Half a Lamb. Possibly best avoided.

That's how I'd say it too but it doesn't sound like roast lamb at all! It's lovely actually 😍

Thank you for saying that! I think this whole thread has made me realise that I have a slight neuroses around certain things and need to chill out!!

ROW-sheen (like row your boat)

My family is Irish and it's one of my favourites, plus it's one of the few Irish names not already taken by one of my cousins.

Edited

You're definitely overthinking this OP. Every surname has first names that sound weird or create strange connotations when paired with it! Fortunately there are thousands of names out there and you just have to find one that doesn't.

If you like Serena, what about Sabina?
If you like Freya, use it, it's fine with Lamb.
If you like Maria, what about Mia or Mina?
Roisin is fine (it's pronounced Rosheen, so it doesn't sound anything like roast).
Joshua is fine too - I had no idea it means Jesus!
But if you like J names what about Jacob, Jake, Jonah, Jordan.

Apologies - I didn't bother with the accents in my original post, but to clarify we would be using Róisín, pronounced ROW (row your boat) sheen

First syllable very much rhymes with roast.

I rather like Elinor Lamb and Cillian Lamb.
I also think Lamb is an awesome surname, but I remember the Editor of the Daily Express was called Larry Lamb (presumably named before the kids TV show 😅) so definitely avoid any names beginning with L.
Also better than Duck - my mother knew a doctor called Donald Duck.
