Surname is a noun - this is much harder than I thought!!

During the course of our baby name conversations, I've realised just how bloody difficult it is to pair our surname with any of the names I've been adding to my list.

Our surname is a Lamb. Difficult enough being a noun, and having that pastoral connection, but so many of my previously chosen names just don't work.

Serena Lamb - "serene lamb" sounds like a description of a really chilled out farm animal

Lila - too many 'L' sounds

Elinor "Elin" - same

Cillian - saaaaame why do so many of my fave names have Ls in them?!

Christian - lamb of God... christian... too on the nose

Joshua - SAME because Joshua literally means Jesus

See also: Maria (also brings to mind "Mary had a little lamb")

Roisin Lamb - sounds too much like roast lamb and I can't unhear it!!

Caitriona - would inevitably be shortened to Cat Lamb (also C.Lamb = clam, but I may be overthinking at this point)

Ophelia Lamb - sounds like you're feeling up a lamb

Freya Lamb - and now you're frying the lamb. (F.Lamb also looks a bit like Flambé 😂)

Francesca (girl) or Fran (boy) - Fran Lamb just sounds dreadful.

I've jokingly suggested we all switch to my maiden name instead because his name is making this unnecessarily hard!

A few of my faves that do work have been used by friends, family members, and ex-boyfriends (I mean, how very dare they) so I can't really use them now.

Any advice from those of you who also have awkward surnames?

It's getting to the point where I might have to go with something really plain and traditional, but I don't want to use a name I don't love just to play it safe. Husband has very few suggestions of his own which doesn't help!

I really like Claudia Lamb. Or Anna?

For a boy Felix, Oscar, Hugo, Benjamin?

wandawaves · 17/09/2026 06:21

You're overthinking a little bit OP.

However, "oh feel ya lamb" made me giggle.
So, no to Ophelia 🤣

BadLad · 17/09/2026 06:11

How about Sam?

ExplodingSmittens · 17/09/2026 06:09

Sympathy from me OP. Our family name is a different noun with the added complication that two letters are out for initials as they spell a word you wouldn’t want to give any child…

I don’t think you’re over thinking and you will find the perfect name Smile

Not Jacob, Jacob lamb is for sale as meat from the traditional British breed.

Ya see? Minefield 😂

Can’t you all go to a hyphenated surname? You might find something like Fletcher-lamb (or whatever) automatically makes it all easier!

ElefantAndCastle · 17/09/2026 03:56

Just pick a name you like and carry on. You overthink big time.

mathanxiety · 17/09/2026 03:53

Sunbringer · 16/09/2026 20:13

Nobody is looking at Joshua and thinking Jesus or Serena and thinking calm lamb. Nor Maria. You’re over thinking it. Roisin is row-sheen? Not roast…

Same RO sound in both.

HugoThatway · 17/09/2026 00:04

Stuart

NoisyHiker · 16/09/2026 23:09

Barry Lamb

Lins77 · 16/09/2026 23:02

I love Slow Horses but not sure Jackson Lamb is a road you want to go down 😄

Actually struggling to think of boys' names though.

For a girl, Rebecca, Rosalind, Emily?

TheBabyFatmoss · 16/09/2026 22:53

Jackson, surely?

deveronvalley · 16/09/2026 22:51

Lamb is a fantastic name and I had a real giggle at some of your options - lots of great suggestions here too. I like Matthew and Jessica Lamb but so many sound good. Best of luck with it all!

Lamb is a great surname to have!

I agree with whoever said that a more-syllabled first name might work better - that said, half my family have one syllable first names and surnames....

Catherine Lamb
Elizabeth Lamb
Caroline Lamb (didn't she have an affair with Lord Byron?)
Christina Lamb

Yes I do like traditional names 😄

I used to know a lovely old lady called Dorothy Lamb.

Agree with this - you need a long first name - Kate Lamb or Lizzie Lamb also sound fine. Penelope/Penny

for boys Richard or Robert/Bertie or Andrew or Thomas or Timothy or David. Might be going a bit biblical there l…

maybe not Beth Lamb

or Henrietta Lamb

Denim4ever · 16/09/2026 22:39

I can see why you feel some names don't work with Lamb, but a lot of really lovely ones do. I'm sure you will find the right one.

I have a surname that sounds like a 2 word command. It's quite unusual and I didn't change it when I got married. Nevertheless, we decided not to inflict it on DC as a surname so its second middle name. My first name is also unusual. Back in the days when one gave details over the phone, I'd often receive envelopes with the most bizarre name on.

CalamityJane81 · 16/09/2026 22:38

The very obvious answer is already in your post. Use your maiden name or double-barrel all your names. You won’t regret it.

I can't suggest much except maybe a 'traditional' 1990s names like Emma, Charlotte, Sarah, Gemma, Hannah etc...

Your first post did make me laugh though @floopyboop 😆

Araminta? 🙊

Minty

Giraffehaver · 16/09/2026 22:32

Actually Henry Lamb sounds good. Joseph, David, Edwin

Giraffehaver · 16/09/2026 22:29

Not Henrietta. Henry ate a lamb. I had a very similar animal maiden name so can empathise. My father suggested Barbara for my sister 🙄
I like pps suggestion of Zinnia or maybe Penelope, Sadie, Verity

DallasMajor · 16/09/2026 22:28

Take it back Iona is even better.
Who knew it would be so hard

BrandiedAromatics · 16/09/2026 22:27

Woah-oh black Betty
