Surname is a noun - this is much harder than I thought!!

During the course of our baby name conversations, I've realised just how bloody difficult it is to pair our surname with any of the names I've been adding to my list.

Our surname is a Lamb. Difficult enough being a noun, and having that pastoral connection, but so many of my previously chosen names just don't work.

Serena Lamb - "serene lamb" sounds like a description of a really chilled out farm animal

Lila - too many 'L' sounds

Elinor "Elin" - same

Cillian - saaaaame why do so many of my fave names have Ls in them?!

Christian - lamb of God... christian... too on the nose

Joshua - SAME because Joshua literally means Jesus

See also: Maria (also brings to mind "Mary had a little lamb")

Roisin Lamb - sounds too much like roast lamb and I can't unhear it!!

Caitriona - would inevitably be shortened to Cat Lamb (also C.Lamb = clam, but I may be overthinking at this point)

Ophelia Lamb - sounds like you're feeling up a lamb

Freya Lamb - and now you're frying the lamb. (F.Lamb also looks a bit like Flambé 😂)

Francesca (girl) or Fran (boy) - Fran Lamb just sounds dreadful.

I've jokingly suggested we all switch to my maiden name instead because his name is making this unnecessarily hard!

A few of my faves that do work have been used by friends, family members, and ex-boyfriends (I mean, how very dare they) so I can't really use them now.

Any advice from those of you who also have awkward surnames?

It's getting to the point where I might have to go with something really plain and traditional, but I don't want to use a name I don't love just to play it safe. Husband has very few suggestions of his own which doesn't help!

Not much help really, sorry, but I did once teach a Saffron Lamb which always made me quite hungry 😁

@Tryagain26 , in your own words "I doubt anyone wouldn't automatically think Jesus if someone told them they were called Joshua!"

My names is also an animal. DD 1 was named Alison. I did not realize until she told me in her teens that A. before a noun looks silly. She rose above it.

The initial C can also be bad (particularly if it is a rude word surname)

menopausalmare · 18/09/2026 17:29

Barbara Lamb (please🙏)

I think you’re overthinking many of these.

KnickerlessParsons · 18/09/2026 16:36

Charles Lamb, Daniel Lamb, Oliver Lamb
Phoebe Lamb, Emma Lamb, Kate Lamb

Just about every name I can think of goes with Lamb. Are there names in DH’s family you could use?

Lins77 · 18/09/2026 16:33

I've googled a few of these names and there are people with all of them - Joshua Lamb has a Wikipedia page. (An eighteenth century Canadian politician!) But there are modern ones too.

I really doubt people will make the Jesus association.

Tryagain26 · 18/09/2026 16:32

HugoThatway · 18/09/2026 16:27

The two names have the same meaning and unless you are with your son 24/7 then you won't know whether or not anyone mentioned it. 😆

It's extremely unlikely that anyone would call someone called Joshua Jesus.
Joshua isn't an uncommon name and I doubt anyone wouldn't automatically think Jesus if someone told them they were called Joshua!

BeardySchnauzer · 18/09/2026 16:31

Keepoffmyartichokes · 18/09/2026 16:29

@HugoThatway that's very true but as we are non religious he would have definitely mentioned if people were calling him Jesus. 😆

you’re not the messiah, you’re a very naughty boy!

You might be over thinking it. My son is called Joshua and no one has ever called him Jesus 😂

Don't double-barrel unless you were going to anyway. Sean Taylor-Lamb won't fool anyone.

Laura95167 · 17/09/2026 20:14

Go to Facebook search lamb and see which lambs have a good first name?

BrandiedAromatics · 17/09/2026 08:09

floopyboop · 17/09/2026 05:26

Ya see? Minefield 😂

Yes, you are right to put thought into it now. Many of the suggestions are fine but I have seen a few Rich(ard) Lambs!

beeble347 · 17/09/2026 07:18

Joshua Lamb is fine, though I see your point about the others.

On the L names, I do think Lilah or Lily is a bit much with Lamb (they're soo popular now anyway) but Lewis or Lena would be fine with the one L.

Loads of names would go great though and it's a sweet name. Friend's surname is Fish, her and her DB have perfectly normal names.

Josephine (Josie) Lamb
Thomas Lamb
Matthew Lamb
Eleanor Lamb
Reuben Lamb
Leo Lamb I don't think is too many Ls either
Hayley Lamb - also doesn't seem too many Ls. I think it's only if you do first letter L and the middle consonant L as well.

I'd avoid Daniel just because Dan Lamb is a bit of a mouthful but Danny is fine.

Isn't Eliza lamb a famous woman who died mysteriously quite recently? I'd be avoiding a namesake here.
